[The Piper at the Gates of Dawn] [Pink Floyd] [1967] [LP] It's hard to believe that the release of Pink Floyd's debut album was 55 years ago yesterday. . I don't necessarily rate this debut album as one of Pink Floyd's best, but it is a very well-made solid psychedelic pop album which was also relatively successful. . "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a typical psychedelic pop album of the time with many creative ideas. However, there were many other bands besides the Beatles who made exactly this kind of music, some even better. I know, some Pink Floyd fans might want to stone me for this statement. But that's how I see or hear it. . In honour of Pink Floyd (which is one of my favourite bands after all!) I can name at least two titles that are outstanding. Perhaps you can already guess. Firstly, there is the brilliant "Astronomy Domine", which can also be found in an even better live version on the 1969 album "Ummagumma", and the wacky "Interstellar Overdrive". These two great pieces alone justify the existence of the whole album! I also find the tracks "Pow R. Toc H", "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" and "Chapter 24" particularly worth mentioning.

“Subtitled “A Bizarre Collection of Antiques & Curios” on Nick Mason’s rather lovely Heath Robinson inspired album cover, this compilation, already their second, but the first worth any serious consideration, was released in 1971, only four years after their debut. For those that were fans of their first two Syd Barrett led or influenced albums, these tracks won’t seem remotely ‘curious’ or bizarre, but given that most of the tracks on this comp were not available on their five previously released albums, it’s a worth collection for any fan. . It showcases some of their most purely psychedelic tracks, before they moved in a more progressive rock direction. There’s a mix of classic Barrett and Floyd tracks such as the non-album singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play; the nine minute Interstellar Overdrive and the quintessential Cambridge ditty Bike from their 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn; and Remember A Day from A Saucerful of Secrets. . As wonderful as these tracks are, what’s most interesting in this release are the B sides and unreleased tracks. Paintbox is a revelation, a Richard Wright composition, which he also sings lead vocal on. It was the B side to Apples and Oranges, the Floyd’s third single and a classic piece of English pastoral psychedelia entirely in keeping with the Canterbury sound. . Biding My Time has a trad jazz feel with Richard Wright playing trombone believe it or not, and it reminded me a little of Jugband Blues, the closing track on their second album A Saucerful Of Secrets. Of a similar vein and equally lovely are Cirrus Minor and Julia Dream, both written by Waters but sung by Gilmour. He also sings The Nile Song, another selection from their soundtrack for the film More. Apologies, but I’ve been listening and not posting the last couple weeks. Got a #backlog of blokes... So, brace yourselves.... BRITISH BLOKES IN BANDS, no. 13. Giving poor old Syd Barrett, former leader of #pinkfloyd, lucky number 13 here—it’s the first Pink Floyd album, before Syd caved in on himself and provided subject matter for some of the 20th century’s most listened-to albums. I remember when John Sheets played me parts of this album in the nineties, I was surprised how it’s not at all like the Pink Floyd I was used to. The songs are rougher but also kind of more song-y, like if the Hollies or Buffalo Springfield went psychedelically berserk but had paid for the studio time so, what the hell, go ahead and hit record. Marry the solo from “Mr. Soul” to the harmonies of “Pay You Back With Interest” then just slow down, take your time and make it all weird. Sooooo much of this seems to be what spawned that Stonehenge section of Spinal Tap AND XTC’s Dukes of Stratosphere. There’s even a little Tolkien-y “The Gnome” on Side 2. The mouth sounds in Pow R.
