The Interstitium
A human body part hiding in plain sight—and the mysteries it might help us solve.
"In this episode we introduce you to a part of our bodies that was invisible to Western scientists until about five years ago; it’s called "the interstitium," a vast network of fluid channels inside the tissues around our organs that scientists have just begun to see, name, and understand."
Researchers have identified a previously unknown feature of human anatomy with implications for the function of all organs, most tissues and the mechanisms of most major diseases.
Published March 27 in Scientific Reports, a new study co-led by an NYU School of Medicine pathologist reveals that layers of the body long thought to be dense, connective tissues - below the skin's surface, lining the digestive tract, lungs and urinary systems, and surrounding arteries, veins, and the fascia between muscles - are instead interconnected, fluid-filled compartments.
This series of spaces, supported by a meshwork of strong (collagen) and flexible (elastin) connective tissue proteins, may act like shock absorbers that keep tissues from tearing as organs, muscles, and vessels squeeze, pump, and pulse as part of daily function.
Importantly, the finding that this layer is a highway of moving fluid may explain why cancer that invades it becomes much more likely to spread. Draining into the lymphatic system, the newfound network is the source of lymph, the fluid vital to the functioning of immune cells that generate inflammation. Furthermore, the cells that reside in the space, and collagen bundles they line, change with age, and may contribute to the wrinkling of skin, the stiffening of limbs, and the progression of fibrotic, sclerotic and inflammatory diseases.

With all that’s known about human anatomy, you wouldn’t expect doctors to discover a new body part in this day and age. But now, researchers say they’ve done just that: They’ve found a network of fluid-filled spaces in tissue that hadn’t been seen before.
These fluid-filled spaces were discovered in connective tissues all over the body, including below the skin’s surface; lining the digestive tract, lungs and urinary systems; and surrounding muscles, according to a new study detailing the findings, published today (March 27) in the journal Scientific Reports.

Scientists say they’ve discovered a new human organ.
In a study published Tuesday, scientists said they may have stumbled upon a previously unknown organ — one of the biggest in the human body.
The research suggests that a network of dense connective tissues and fluid-filled compartments called the interstitium is a full-fledged organ, and could significantly advance our understanding of cancer and many other diseases.

Good News.
Hi everyone. Sorry I’ve been gone a while. I’ve been really preoccupied lately.
But good news, I’m back, and I have some announcements.
-I’m going to take up cosplaying again. (I went through a rough patch, inspiration-wise.) Some characters you can expect to see coming up are Daenerys Targaryen, Wonder Woman, Loki, Green Lantern, and Hela. Also I’ll be going more in-depth with my cosplays, like how I made them.
-I’ll be posting more about things that are important to me, like God, asexuality, cosplaying, etc.
-I’m going to be posting about two things, one of which I think needs serious awareness.
One of them is my brother’s Youtube channel, and the other is Interstitial Lung Disease. ILD is a respiratory disease that occurs when the interstitium tissue, the tissue surrounding the air sacs, is affected. The most common symptoms are coughing and severe shortness of breath.
Because of this disease, at one point in my life, I had to be on steroids and oxygen. I almost died one winter because of ILD and pneumonia
I’m here today and off the oxygen and steroids. And I thank God so much for that. But there are a lot of people that aren’t, because this disease can look like a lot of different respiratory problems. (Asthma, COPD, etc.)
So I just thought I would share the information I know with you all.
