LET’S TALK ABOUT INTIMACY COORDINATION!!!

So much sexual assault happened (and happens) on film sets. Especially in the 1900’s.

It’s historically documented. Not just between actors.

There is a lot more to do with non-consent and sexual assault in the industry besides the casting couch.

Intimacy Coordinators are on set to keep actors SAFE!!! Any scene that requires Actors to be hands-on with another actor should have someone whose entire job is to be on stand-by and to direct and adjust scenes so they look good on camera and keep everyone safe! We have people in charge of weaponry, we have stunt actors and coordinators, fight choreographers; Intimacy Coordination is another role on set that is just as crucial!!!

Love Eric, love that he felt that Special Effects was a safe enough set that he didn’t feel it was necessary to have an IC even for Sexual Scenes and Sexual Violence scenes BUT I’m sure it wouldn’t have damaged the movie to have had an IC there to assist in safety & choreography!!!

I definitely think “Special Effects” could have 100% used an intimacy coordinator.

He and the actress he filmed with were nude, in close contact, filmed a sex scene and a scene of violent assault while nude.

Glad nothing bad happened (that he knows of) but it’s always good to be safe.

Intimacy Coordinator’s are NECESSARY and VITAL parts of crew that have UNIQUE jobs that are irreplaceable.

A Director is not an intimacy coordinator and knows that!!!

a kind little reminder since the twitter fandom is screaming about it now (and i don't want to post publically on there)

intimacy coordinators (especially hired by HBO) are literally used for the tiniest of things

like they probs had an intimacy coordinator on set for Jim's nude swimming in s1 and provided they were doing things by the book they would have had one for the kiss/es as well

under Equity NZ guidelines - and i am speaking from an informed position as a literal member of an Equity NZ committee - it's very bad practise these days to have intimate scenes (in a show that has funding for a stunt coordinator) without an IC/a similar role present

however it doesn't mean that there'll be like an actual sex scene on screen

I've literally done IC work for some flirtation, touching and a tiny kiss

This is so cool bc I´m pretty sure Omar and Edvin helped develop the intimacy guidelines with their input (Sara wouldn´t just tag them bc of a pic i think, and they talked about actors being involved among many others). A big recurring theme of that first international IC conference in Berlin (the public day of seminars i took part in online) was about developing the job basically from scratch, working without rules or guidelines and sometimes having to spend a lot of energy fighting for a good work environment and respect and in some cases even having to leave sets when work was made impossible or ignored. In one panel Malin Erikson was a part of, it was mentioned that they were working on these guidelines in Sweden, and it was a big deal.

We caught up with Sara Arrhusius to chat about their work in Young Royals Season 2 (including scene discussion and relationship dynamics), challenging themselves as an intimacy coordinator, fan engagement, and upcoming projects.

So.

Holy shit. Vanessa Coffey did some amazing work on 6.01.

In general, like I said before, you can FEEL a higher level of comfort and confidence in characters with intimate relationships this season. It’s 100% palpable.

I’m sure I’ll have more time to talk about that later.

For today —

And I mean, sort of spoilers below —

We’ll talk about the scene of intimacy between Jamie and Claire.

There are A TON of positive things I can say about this scene. Masterfully staged, shot (having an IC in the room does actually make a difference with cinematography), and performed… truly, no notes.

Two elements I want to acknowledge in particular —

Gaze and destination.

Gaze refers simply to eye contact. Making and breaking eye contact (often related to the ideas referred to as “seeking and avoiding” in the IDIC world) is HUGE in telling the story of intimacy. Sam Heughan’s unwavering gaze as Jamie, and the way the cinematography captures it is PERFECT for the storytelling of this moment and the emotional state of the character. Beautiful, beautiful work.

When we talk about destination in IDIC work, we’re thinking about where a body part starts contact vs where it’s headed. It’s important this is specific — without specificity, we get a lot of half movements, flappy hands, and generally very messy storytelling (in intimate performance as a whole — not calling out anything in particular in OL, to be clear). Not so in this episode at all. Here, we saw a lot of really lovely destination work with noses, lips, and hands, esp. at the beginning of the sequence here… very focused movement that, you’ll notice, felt neither “overly choreographed” (a common concern) or unmotivated. It read as honest, real, emotional, focused… perfect. Pacing was also gorgeous — compared to some of the intimacy in season five, NOTHING was rushed. Hand placement and destination work at the end of the moment of intimacy was also beautiful as well and very, very strong storytelling.

I just want to point out again that, on a film set for a show like this, you do not just do things once. We know for a fact that OL scenes of intimacy involve multiple takes. Choreography performed by highly skilled actors keeps that consistency so we get a beautiful, specific, powerful end product like what aired tonight. (And yes, we do know that the IC worked with Sam and Cait [the reference to the “safe word”/self care cue in that interview], even if she was there also to help newer performers. There is no actor so experienced they don’t benefit from an outside eye or learning a cutting edge technique.)

I’m so very excited to see what else Ms Coffey does in this season….. and I sure hope that episodes like tonight will help people see that an IC is only there to help the actors and it can seriously, seriously pay off with some awesome storytelling.

Proof that Vanessa Coffey DID work on the Jamie/Claire scenes. He also goes on later in the interview to say that her work helped enrich their scenes, which is EXACTLY it… in addition to safety work, IDICs are there to support an actor’s instincts and strengthen the storytelling in a safe, dynamic and repeatable way through choreo or movement coaching, not to be a puppet master. I still fail to understand why some of y’all think this is a bad thing.
