Tip #173: INVENT HYBRID SUBJECTS. It’s hard to ignore this image from “Beautiful Dead Things,” a prize-winning short directed by @ReneeFaia and Ingela Ogard. While these days we associate the word “hybrid” with automobiles, the concept dates back at least to the time of Greek mythological characters such as the Minotaur. Synthesizing is straightforward using today’s digital editing apps although it does require creativity. It takes the human eye to determine when a combination really works. MOBILE MOVIE OF THE WEEK: “Run” In 2018 the editors of MobileMovieMaking Magazine chose “Robot Attack” as the Mobile Movie of the Year.” Now the Canadian-based director @BrianVowles is back with “Run,” a one-minute action thriller. Tip #109: USE AN EYE CLOSE-UP TO REINFORCE EMOTION. One of the most powerful ways to convey emotion is to capture a close-up of your subject’s eyes. Usually this works best if you first present a shot of the whole face. The image here is from a horror short “The Knocking” directed by Patrick Krivanek. But you must shoot using a smartphone or other mobile device. MobileMovieMaking Tip #79: USE MEDIUM SHOTS FOR STORYTELLING. Of all the varieties of shots, close-ups are the most celebrated. A shot of a characters eyes or mouth or fist tends to be riveting. Ditto a close-up of an object such as a time bomb or a diamond ring. But when it comes to accomplishing most of the storytelling work in Hollywood movies, directors rely o the medium shot (MS). This image, which occupies the middle ground between a long (distant) shot and a close-up typically shows a person from the head to above the knees. The shot is sufficiently far away to put the character into context, but close enough to capture subtle gestures. French film critics called it the “American Shot,” perhaps because it was used so frequently in Westerns. In reality, the medium shot is commonly used in music videos, news reports, documentaries, commercials, and just about every kind of movie. If you typically film your subjects from further back—capturing them from head to toe—you might experiment by coming in closer.
