Ive been playing a bit of piggy intercity and i wanna check out whats goin on with jailbreak and ive been biting my nails over whether i should upload my DOORS vid before or after the archives releases but would you be surprised if i actually spent more of my time working on something for… In Plain Sight 2??
So, recently, I got a friend into the game (i figured its juust the kind of genre for them and it was!!) and it was pretty fun. However, something that took my interest while I was playing were all of the lobby NPCs you can find lying around between rounds. they have different dialogue lines you can read depending on rarity, and it’s quickly become something on my mind.
I want to see all the dialogue!! I mean there’s a wiki, but i do not trust it to be up to date at all. plus its one of the wikis on the adslop Fandom site that i trust even less.
My solution? make a giant google doc of my own containing all of the dialogue lines for every NPC that can be discovered. it seemed like a pretty impossible task until the game’s discord informed me that the wiki is indeed up to date beside like 4 npcs but… uh
whatever i got the idea rolling. 90% of it is just copy and pasting lines from the wiki onto the doc and clearing formatting to make it all nice and neat.
however, holy SHIT theres a lot of lines. I knew it was gonna be a big task but i think its over like a hundred fuckin pages in all. now sure thats really headache inducing buut to me? i guess that just means more reading material
the characters in this game are genuinely some of the most nuanced and diverse ive ever seen in ages. and to top it off the reason for why is REALLY fuckin funny.
the list of thieves you can play as is wack as fuuck. You got regular humans, sure, but now you got geniuses, birds, a bunny girl, Frankensteins Fucking Monster, a robot, more magical figures, magicians, a cat, astronaut, King Fucking Midas, Achilles, and hey i dont think i need to go on you get the poinNevermind i just remembered THEY HAVE A FUCKING ANGEL AND DEVIL IN THE THIEF LIST.
Call me crazy, but I don’t think they made this cast with lore in mind. I think one day they just went “yoo we should add lore to our game” and some other guy went “alright. now where do we start with our cast of 10 billion different thieves that have daunting implications for worldbuilding, including magic, religion, ancient history, war, and literature?”
…and then the other guy goes “fuck it we ball, don’t retcon ANYTHING, we’re making this work” because apparently they have a lore reason for almost EVERYTHING.
The whole angel and devil thing? yeah, apparently the afterlife is real, and Angel’s powers in-game work whether or not you have faith in her, and she may or may not have baggage with the people up there. The devil guy’s just here on some weird contract.
Frankenstein’s Monster? Apparently Victor Frankenstein was real and everything that happened in the book happened in the game’s universe except for the monster deciding to try redeeming himself and finding the capacity to love again.
Santa? Hes stealing just to give the other thieves money as an incentive to stop being in the whole thievery business in the first place, which he quickly learns backfires.
Crow whisperer? Plague Doctor? Ghosts? Dude wielding a big old staff? Yep, magic is real, but apparently the magical people in this world are just really good at hiding it or something.
Hell, all of the diversity in everything doesn’t have to be big and fantastical. There’s pretty good trans rep with Sprint and Subzero. There’s military veterans like Private Brian and that fuckin weirdo Murphy. There’s people poor like the Doc guy and rich people like Scrooge. You have the kindest people on earth like Lumi or Whiskers and then people like Rose or Bandit or the Mummy. You have geniuses like Mr. Black and Payday, but then people like Shadow or Chase are… Not
There’s even things like the shrouded mystery of what they did to Dawnstar, and then
Champion
There’s so much nuance to it, and it’s so impressive to me. Everyone really has their own thing going on and their own bits of baggage and their own personal lives.
Sure, yes, the cast is diverse, but writers put in the work of making everyone feel like someone who matters. They’re all definitely not equally as important, but they all feel equally as real.
It’s subtle things you learn about them through dialogue. One thief is in the hell that is college despite being a “gifted kid” and is painfully overworked in the most mundane sense possible. One had to fight the war in Vietnam. One thinks they have friends waiting for them to bail them out of what’s supposed to be a temporary thieving business. One didn’t even want to be here if not for wanting to be there for his friends. I’m sorry if I sound like a broken record, but EVERYONE seems to have their life so… real.
To me, I think that just the concept of another human life existing is insane to me. People view things differently, they value different things, make different choices, have years worth of entirely different memories and have different physical mental, and/or emotional circumstances. I think that viewing life through the true, complete, and utter lens of another human being is like trying to view a new color. You can’t completely do that. At least, you can’t do it very well. Only rough ideas.
I think this game really does that. I think that this game is able to make each and every character feel like a person who got to live decades, grow up in different communities, have a favorite movie, and has their mind wander off to something whenever they’re up late at night trying to sleep.
All of this is done with a roster of characters they obviously didn’t plan everything out for, in a roblox game about stealing. God damn.
