Rest In Peace to Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia.
These two women died protecting their students.
Prayers to their entire family and community. 💔
"But the reality is, as horrible as what happened, it could have been worse. The reason it was not worse is because law enforcement officials did what they do. They showed amazing courage by running toward gunfire for the singular purpose of trying to save lives. And it is a fact that because of their quick response getting on the scene, being able to respond to the gunman, and eliminate the gunman, they were able to save lives..."
I need to take a moment to gather my thoughts for this.
Really? REALLY? First of all, telling grieving families that things could have been worse has to be the most insensitive fucking thing I can think of. You had children covering themselves in the blood of friends so they could pretend to be dead, so they wouldn't get shot. You had children calling 911, hopelessly begging for them to send police, to send help. You had teachers die trying to save their students. You had a child get shot after police said to yell for help. You had parents pepper sprayed, tazered, cuffed, begging for the police to go in and save their families. A man had a heart attack after learning his wife was shot dead. These are 21 lives cut short. These are families, students, teachers, friends, a whole community with wounds that will never heal.
Meanwhile police were standing outside for an hour, while parents begged and screamed and cried for them to go inside. They could've been shot? They were armed, they had the vests, and if an unarmed, unprotected mother can run in to save her kids then law enforcement can do so much more. They stood outside while children were being slaughtered like animals, while they were smearing friends' blood on themselves to play dead, while they repeatedly called 911 for help.
This could have been worse? How? How can you know that 21 lives are lost, 19 of them children, and have the helium-filled balls to say it could have been worse? Law enforcement did nothing. They had no courage. They were cowards at best. They didn't run towards gunfire. They dragged their feet. They didn't go in there to save lives. They stood idly by while lives were lost.
And for only 2 minutes and 30 seconds of an 11 minute speech to be dedicated to this incident, while the rest is about praising law enforcement for their "amazing courage" and "quick response" to it, and about everything they've done and will do, is absolutely insanity.
Nobody should have to go through this. How many now are wondering when they'll be next? How many children are wondering when a shooter will walk through the doors? How many parents fear that when they send their kids to school, their kids might not make it back? How many teachers have to brace themselves everyday for the possibility that they may die trying to save their students?

But it could have been worse, right?
Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia were seen trying to shelter their students from the gunfire.
In contrast with the cowardly and lazy police who wouldn't lift a finger for children begging 911 for their lives, there is a special place in Valhalla for these woman. This is what true heroism looks like.
The admission of inadequate handling will not assuage those who have lost their loved ones. This rather raises more questions regarding the preparedness of the local police authorities, who were armed to the teeth, but remained hesitant when it came to entering the school building and neutralizing Salvador Ramos.
Police in Uvalde not only waited outside the doomed classrooms at Robb Elementary School for over 70 minutes despite desperate calls from children inside and the howls of parents outside; they also penalised parents who tried saving their children. Angeli Gomez was handcuffed for no reason by police, then uncuffed only after she recognised some of the officers. After this, she climbed the fence and ran into the school to save her two children.
Another was Tasered, another was pepper-spayed. Meanwhile, the shooter was barricaded in a classroom, murdering children.
The police, who were heavily armed, and whose own instructions demand that they confront an active shooter, refused to rescue the children earlier because they feared they would get shot. Don’t they think that parents like Angeli Gomez also feared getting shot? Yet the unarmed woman risked her own life without a second thought. Teachers Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles threw themselves in front of their schoolchildren to defend them from bullets. In fact, Irma Garcia was found with children in her arms.
Obviously teachers and parents show more integrity than the police force, who are funded by taxpayers to prevent crime and disorder. I hope these officers are all fired and are subject to a class action lawsuit for negligence and dereliction of duty. I now hear from CBS that one police officer has stopped responding to further requests from investigators.
The police could have saved some or even most of those children, but they chose not to. If not for incredibly brave teachers Garcia and Mireles, as well as parents like Gomez, this tragedy could have taken more lives.
#RobbElementary teacher #IrmaGarcia gave her life while trying to shield her young students from danger. Rest in Peace, Irma... 💔
On Tuesday, the tandem farewell began for the Garcias, with a joint visitation and rosary at a local funeral home, and a funeral Mass Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The tragedy of Uvalde continued last Thursday, when the husband of slain teacher Irma Garcia, Joe, keeled over and died of a heart attack after returning home from his wife’s memorial. Relatives say that Joe Garcia, a grocery store worker, died of a broken heart after losing his wife of 24 years. Irma and Joe married out of high school and had four children, all of whom have now lost two parents in the space of two days.
May they rest in peace.
Gun violence doesn’t just take innocent lives. It ruins the lives of survivors too, possibly forever. Research shows that the death of a spouse triggers enormous stress responses, and the results can be fatal. I recall when Debbie Reynolds, the mother of Carrie Fischer, died shortly after her daughter. Even among those who survive, I assume the impact of such bereavement can be higher blood pressure, increased risk for heart attack or cardiac arrest.
Because of a crazed murderer and the shocking ineptitude of the police force, the Garcia children must live with this double bereavement for years to come. As if that wasn’t horrific enough, they will have to watch as the politicians in charge of making effective legislation steadfastly refuse to implement effective gun control measures so that such acts can never occur again.
Even worse, these children (and their extended family) will live with the knowledge that another shooting could occur at any time in America, renewing their trauma. Children across the nation are once again forced to worry about being murdered at school, with many practicing active shooter drills instead of focusing on their studies.
This renewal of trauma has already happened to the families of the Sandy Hook victims, who lost a combined 20 children when another crazed gunman went on a rampage through the elementary school. His weapon of choice? An AR-15, just like the Robb shooter.
The one piece of good news is that Americans are very charitable people. The Garcia family initially asked for $10 000 to help the bereaved children. Over $2.7 million has been raised for them. Other children and families have similarly received an outpouring of generosity from the entire country, more generosity than was shown by the arrogant state government and useless police force.
Ultimately, however, this is not enough. I saw some Americans under another WaPo article saying that Governor Abbott and the NRA should fund the mental health costs for the Garcia family, as well as other shooting victims. Even that would not be enough.
Until these greedy and cowardly politicians say no to the NRA’s mob tactics and instead protect American children by implementing effective gun control legislation, they are morally responsible for the fact that these mass killings continue. Shame on them!
