As a wee Gnome lad, Alvyn was constantly met and talked to by ‘imaginary friends’. There were lots of them, and they were everywhere. His parents thought he would grow out of it. Sufficed to say, Alvyn didnt grow out of it.
He tried to discover what it was that was going on with him. He knew his imaginary friends were imaginary. He KNEW it. so he became a librarian. Sat in the library, day in day out, he learned how and where to find information. Knows his way round the dewey decimal system. It took a while, but he found some things located in old dusty moth eaten books in the back annals of history. Apparently some form of clairvoyance? From that, he started taking more of a interest in actually finding out about the dead.
many a night spent with the dead in cemeteries gave him a hearty constitution, and much as he doesnt like to admit it, some dealing with dead magic. After the unlocking of the dead magic he was playing with, he realised he had a little bit of success with other magics he found in the library. (The Unseen Servant spell he found? Absolutely one of his favourites. A helping hand in the library? Fantastic!)
unfortunately, a problem arose with some less than scrupulous adventurers. Alvyn is a little too trusting, and eager to help. Fortunately for him, and unfortunately for the ‘adventurers’ trying to murderhobo him, he asked for help from a passing spirit, while in the midst of this trap dungeon they’d set up, and a skeleton animated itself, and helping distracting and then dispatching the thugs. They did once try to come back, but Alvyn managed to recraft the spell shield a little, and shield himself from them
