I was thinking about the horror of Iron Lung—specifically the kind of fear it elicits vs the comforts it gives—and now I don’t think we appreciate just how alone Simon is.

Like, yeah, he’s trapped in a hunk of metal and dropped miles away from human life. The only way he communicates with people is through the intercom, and the only time he gets to actually see that person it’s through a bleeding window. He’s isolated from everyone else, we know this.

What I haven’t seen people consider is the fact that he’s isolated from the ocean.

There’s a level of separation that your brain will allow you to have when looking at something on screen. Simon navigates with a camera and a screen; there’s a layer, maybe two, of separation between him in and the ocean—between him and the things that live in the ocean. The SM-13 offers comfort by virtue of protecting Simon from the horrors.

But when the blood starts dripping in? When the outside trickles into the meager amount of safety that Simon has been able to scrape together in hell? When he stops being so alone in a supposedly dead world? It’s so much more terrifying than being the only living thing in an empty ocean. Because it’s not empty. He’s not alone.

Being alone probably would’ve been better than what he actually got.
