Of the five central characters to the main conflict (Ladybug, Chat Noir, Gabriel, Lila, & Felix), CN's motivation is definitely the black cat. Like, everyone else's goal involves *defeating* another central character, and CN still just wants Ladybug's love.

hmm 🤔 yeah it's kinda weird. like, ordinarily i would say Adrien's motivation is workable, and it is, but the way the ml writers handle it is...Not Good.

like okay, Adrien Wants Ladybug and Adrien Wants His Miraculous. cool. we can work with that. this could make for an interesting character and arc wherein Adrien grows to Want To Help People, instead of just pursuing his own personal desires.

OR like, if ml was a romcom cartoon Adrien wanting to Get It On with Ladybug, and that being his predominant motivator would just make him look like an ordinary romcom love interest. but in a setting where he is meant to be a hero...when Adrien is mostly motivated for very small, self-serving reasons...it doesn't do a very good job of painting him as a hero.

like, Marinette in contrast, while she is motivated by wanting to Get It On with Adrien, that motivation is secondary to her desire to help people and defeat the bad guy!

like??? instead of balancing adrien's motives so that he cares about helping people just a tad bit more than getting a girlfriend (the way Marinette is more balanced) or developing Adrien so that he learns to care about other people over himself? that! that would work! but we don't have that so instead of a struggling character in a tough situation we just get this selfish prick that the narrative refuses to show us is a selfish prick. fuck.

anyway, like, to clarify, i don't think one motivation is superior to the other, and if used properly can be really compelling and interesting...but adrien's motives aren't used in a compelling or interesting way.

it's late and I'm thinking of that one wlw couple I used to watch on youtube when I was 14. they lived in NYC, and they vlogged their domestic lives, and I'm pretty sure they are broken up now, and I'm not gonna pretend I ever actually knew anything about their relationship, but boy did it give me hope
