I've realized that I finally have a point of reference for Moon Knight. When Doug Moench took over for Batman at DC, one of his first stories was about a racist cop who had his skin burnt off in a house fire and who's now stalking the streets killing his ex police force friends. That story of the savage skull is basically just a moon knight story. After skimming some wiki entries for doug moench's moon knight stories, I've realized that Moon Knight is just Batman but somehow darker and grislier in the crimes he deals with. Doug Moench has a serial killer and a man who kills people with his teeth in two back to back issues. A magazine story had a serial killer with an axe. I mean...it doesn't get much worse than that.
So Moon Knight is just a character whose design I can appreciate, and whose niche I can also now appreciate. But it's too much for me, and it's not even as charming as the monster comics or the magic stuff. No, it's a man with three lives fighting the darkest things ever. It's like how the punisher has a villian with a completely messed up face that's just a mass of scar tissue. These characters probably have their place, but it's a dark place I need never dwell in. I don't want to get lost in the darkness of these stories, and it's too much for me.
