maybe an unpopular opinion but i'm getting the sense that more and more people online are treating the pitt like some kind of Reality TV Show and not like the Fictional TV Show that it is... I understand the whole ''most realistic medical drama'' thing but some of the takes I've read make me believe people are getting so invested in criticizing the characters that they start to sound like they're talking about real life situations that have happened. I'm kinda considering just watching the show without engaging with the fandom because.. it gets to a point. idk
this is quite funny to me because i've been thinking that people are watching the pitt like it's a documentary!! they're treating these characters like they're real and this plays into the ever present and ever fierce argument of realising what's fiction and what's reality. we have an entertainment drama highlighting the stresses and ordeals of the american healthcare system and people are treating it like its the kardashian's or a netflix documentary.
the other problem we have is we have so many characters and each character has their own individual problems. so you have addiction, you have self harm, you have depression, you have suicidal ideation, you have a repressed trauma, you have loneliness, you have issues with empathy, and alongside all of that you have an audience who love these characters so fiercely that they become 'perfect' in their eyes. nuance and grey areas are vacuumed out and all there's room for is black and white and finding a villain and a hero to fight over. the 'villain' is the cuts to medicare, it's the cuts to an overworked and fragile system. what's going on is an overworked team of characters who battle everyday to portray what's happening out there in the real world. you need to see the nuance, you need to see not everybody is right and wrong, you need to see the biases and yes you don't have to agree with them. but instead santos is a bitch, langdon is a no good addict, robby is a bitter racist misogynist, samira mohan is a princess who can do no wrong ever, dennis whitaker is a favoured white boy who deserves no character development, al-hashimi is awful because she favours AI, and hey guess what their shift still isn't over!
