Gasoline | Chapter 8: the impulse to love and the instinct to kill
Author: hijinks_n_lowjinks
Summary:
Fushiguro Megumi is a poacher; a lethally trained hunter working to capture the last dregs of humanity to feed his vampiric clients and keep his sister safe. Megumi assumes that he will be hunting down his own kind for the rest of his days until coven leader, Mahito, makes him an offer he can't refuse:
A man named Itadori Yuuji has fled the chains of the coven to try and disappear into the wilds of Japan, stealing an important vampiric relic in his escape. Megumi must find Itadori and return him to the coven alive, using whatever means necessary to gain his trust. Should Megumi fulfill their contract, he and his sister will receive full immunity from vampire-kind as they walk away from their dealings. A final contract.
But when Megumi does make contact with Itadori, he finds that doing his job comes with more complications than expected.

"You know the inter-dimensional readings they’ve been monitoring here? They flared into a warp hole thirty minutes ago and tossed out a kid.”
Now that was an interesting development. “Alien?”
“Human. A boy who claims he's the son of Dick Grayson.”
Dick blinked, waiting for Donna to crack and smile before telling him what really happened. But his friend looked far from amused.

“Dammit, you’re positive I’m needed?”
This was not how his evening was supposed to start. There were things to take care of and set up before staking out a new and dangerous smuggling ring all night. Bad enough Nightwing was playing catch up after nearly a year of being absent from Blüdhaven’s streets at the same time Dick Grayson was trying to re-establish himself. Getting shot in the head tended to cause problems like that.
Which is precisely why Justice League problems were not his concern. “Can't you make do with Bats?” complained Dick, “Or Robin? Literally anyone other than me?”
“Oh, you’re right!” Donna snapped her fingers in his comm, no doubt rolling her eyes, “I meant to call Plastic Man, silly me.”
Tires squealed as Dick cut a sharp U-turn and earned a few annoyed honks. Two alleys back was a hidden garage for his bike. “Anyone dying?”
“Not yet.”
“That’s reassuring. And kinda boring.” He hopped off the Wing-cycle and rolled it into a narrow metal slot that opened in the brick wall. A button on his gauntlet made the false wall slide shut. “What’s my jump code?”
“Check your secure messages.”
A quick tap on the side of his domino mask brought up the HUD. “Whoa, this is a Hall of Justice code. I thought Watchtower–”
“Stop thinking and hurry!”
Donna was waiting in the lobby where he teleported in, tapping her foot impatiently as he took a settling breath. It’d been a while since he traveled via zeta tube. “Come on.” She said, turning on her heel.
Dick jogged to catch up with her quick pace. “What’s happened? Because something’s happened. Is someone actually dying?”
Reluctantly, Donna ground to a halt. “Batman didn’t want to tell you before you arrived and at first I agreed–”
“Tell the FAA to watch out for flying pigs–ow!”
She punched his shoulder again. “Get your jokes out now because I changed my mind and you need to be prepared. You know the inter-dimensional readings they’ve been monitoring here? They flared into a warp hole thirty minutes ago and tossed out a kid.”
Now that was an interesting development. “Alien?”
“Human. A boy who claims he's the son of Dick Grayson.”
Dick blinked, waiting for Donna to crack and smile before telling him what really happened. But his friend looked far from amused. “Sorry, what? Me? Dick Grayson, me?”
“Batman is obviously running a panel of tests and no one is expecting you to claim him–”
“They must be since I’m being summoned!” Was he freaking out? Dick didn’t think he was freaking out. Stuff like this didn't trip him up. Plus he liked kids, got along with them. But his own inter-dimensional kid was something else entirely.
“Honey, he’s scared,” She grabbed his hand imploringly, “He’s not your kid and you’re not his dad but you might be the only person he recognizes.”
“Abandon your old memories. It’s time to be born anew, Billy.”
Billy stared at his reflection, and staring back at him… was his mother. He was glad that he didn't look anything like Neil. But as much as he looked like his mother… he hated it. Because he will never see her again, the only time he would come to see her was through his own reflection. She had to be dead by now.
He missed her, so damn much.
Billy stood up, fist clenched, disturbed. What was with the resurgence of memories this morning? He had things to do, a castle to keep running.

“So… Who is that guy?” Allison asked as she watched the man vigorously wipe his hands with what she assumed was some kind of disinfecting towelette.
Lee noticed where her stare was directed and chuckled. “That, Allison, is Adrian Monk.”
(“Did you have a dream?” meets “Here’s what happened.” Allison Dubois and Adrian Monk team up to investigate the hit-and-run murder of a young violinist. Can they crack the case, or will the ghosts of the past cloud their judgement?)
“It’s lucky you’re here actually, Malik. They figured out the riddle from the church.” Anthony shuffled papers on his desk as Zayn snapped to attention. “The next victim is a contestant of the upcoming Mr. UK pageant. It’s a great breakthrough, but we have a slight problem.”
Zayn looked to Liam for answers, but it was obvious this was the first he’d heard of it too. “Which is?”
“We’re going to need someone to go undercover, and it’s going to be you.”
Liam’s hand fell to the back of Zayn’s chair with a thump.
A darker Miss Congeniality AU that follows Zayn and Liam, MI5 agents, partners since training and best friends, as they race to stop a serial killer. When Liam makes a tactical call that backfires and almost gets Zayn killed during a raid, he refuses to let Zayn be the one to put himself at risk when all signs point to an upcoming pageant for the serial killer’s next target. While everyone around them seems to be hiding something and they're forced further apart, Liam and Zayn need to find the person responsible, protect each other with everything they have, and figure out why everything suddenly feels different between them.
In the glimmer of another life, the devil spends a summer in the library of a sleepy town; two not-so-strangers drift into each other’s lives on the waning tides of fate; a beguiling finfolk journeys far from home to save a troublesome mortal; a captivated man is given a year to change the circumstances of his ending; two women seeking a bachelor’s heart find themselves in an unexpected tangle.
In this third anthology of fairytales for the modern era, Olivie Blake brings you further tales of romance, each one a provocative glimpse of irreverent humor, daring exploits, and, as always, the inevitable enchantment of love.
