This got a bit long - but the answers are under the cut!

My writing style has definitely changed a lot since I started writing fanfiction. I’ve wanted to try and move away from a style that’s too.. descriptive. Less just recounting things, and writing in a way that shows characters emotions more strongly. In order to do that, I spend a lot of my time before writing just observing. How people interact (myself, friends, others - in books, on television, in podcasts, just in my life), how they express themselves, little habits they have that are unique. So when I go to write, it’s all about the little headcanons. How does this character interact with the world? What do they like, dislike? How do they carry themselves? For a lot of characters (Like Iwaizumi and Oikawa) who I write a lot, many of these headcanons translate across different AUs, so they’re a lot easier for me to write. I just shift different ones in and out that apply or don’t apply for whatever I’m writing. I’ve found thinking more about figuring out the characters first, before I even attempt to write anything, has helped me develop my characters more clearly!

Dialogue is probably my biggest struggle, but I’ve found I’m improving a lot listening to podcasts and interacting with a lot of different people to see how they communicate, and how that varies so strongly from person to person. It’s all about practice - I’ve only recently felt I’m really comfortable writing the Iwaoi banter just the way I want it. That’s really helped me shape how I write and I would definitely recommend new writers spend some time 

Honestly, I write what I want to read. I’ve stopped trying to write anything other than that and I feel like writing has gotten more enjoyable and I’ve produced much better works than before.

A lot of other writers have influenced my style!

@zanimez​ (surveycorpsjean) - Han has such a unique writing style, and was one of my first influences in the fandom! I love how emotional all of her works are, you really get into the head space of the characters, she’s so talented!

@frenchibi (frenchibi) - French’s writing is very poignant and I love her Iwaois. I have the pleasure of getting to talk ideas and write with her, and it’s definitely really helped me improve how I write them!

@topftopf (smokey310) - I love how natural all the interactions are in all of their fics? Ahh it’s so great, the humor is on point and the dialogue has really inspired me to improve the fluidity of these sorts of scenes that I write.

Getting the chance to hash out ideas with friends, shout about AUs and work with other people has just taken my writing to another level. If you don’t share fic ideas with anyone before writing, I highly recommend that you do! So many ideas of mine have just taken new life, and I’ve gained so much motivation to write them by talking with friends about them. It doesn’t have to be with just writers, either. I’m so grateful to so many of my non-writing friends who always welcome me throwing ideas at them. Those who read fics have just as many fabulous ideas!

My biggest tip for new writers would be to write as much as possible, and try whatever comes to mind! Don’t stray away from an idea because it seems too ambitious, or you have no experience in that sort of genre. Gotta quote Wayne Gretzky here - you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take! If you don’t try, you’ll never improve. 

I really enjoy those ask memes, where you just pick a sentence and a ship/character and then just write. Don’t stop to think too hard about it, just practice. I try to ensure that I keep those ask replies short (200-500 words is my target, I’m happy as long as it’s under 1k)

If you want to write something but don’t know how - talk to somebody! My ask box is always open, and I’ve yet to meet another writer in this fandom who hasn’t welcomed a message in their ask box to talk about writing. Love an author and how they write? They might have some tips for you, or they might want to share ideas with you! 

Lastly, don’t try to please anyone. First and foremost it’s important to write for you. Writing isn’t going to be enjoyable if you’re trying to force yourself to write characters, ships, or storylines that you’re not invested in. You’re going to get some comments that feel discouraging. There’s going to be fics you love upon completion that aren’t going to get very many kudos or comments. There’s always going to be writers who get double or triple the amount of kudos than you do. It’s going to be hard not to get discouraged, you will probably compare your writing and feedback too much with others - it happens! Just remember that your writing matters, and it’s impactful to who is reading it.

Headcanons: The Dragon Brothers

- They’re both actually Japanese. And actually brothers.

- Genji’s done both kendo and fencing since high school, so his talent comes from practice.

- Hanzo’s archery doesn’t.

- They both do their own stunts because they seem to be the best at it. But Genji’s costume actually made him slip so the shoe covers were replaced with custom ordered shoes.

- Both of them are sweetest people EVER. On the first day of the official filming, they brought four extra large pizzas and drinks.

- It’s hard to believe, but it’s easy to make Hanzo laugh. In fact, he laughs the most even when he messes up lines.

- The Dragons short took forever to film because Genji kept making his brother laugh. He kept saying most of his lines in a southern accent.

- Of course, Genji was laughing himself.

- Genji’s the one who always tries to make everyone laugh. His most successful attempts involved the most inappropriate accent in the most serious moments.

- He once made all the Talon actors laugh by yelling out one of Gabriel’s lines in Reinhardt’s voice.

- If you run and jump at Hanzo at any time — yes, that includes during filming — he will catch you no matter what.

- Genji proved this. At an awards ceremony. On the red carpet. They both dissolved into laughter soon after.

- Hanzo’s hair is shorter than the wing he wears. He doesn’t want to grow it out cause “it’s hard to coordinate with longer hair”.

- Genji doesn’t have that problem. He had his hair dyed green for a solid month before it was dyed black again.

- During the time he had to film as Young Genji, he called his scarf the carrot scarf. It was that name that made Hanzo call him Little Carrot for that month.

- They both are close friends with Mccree and Fareeha. Hanzo knew Mccree from elementary school and Genji met Fareeha in freshman year high school. After meeting each other, the four eventually became best friends.
