The problem was that once Xena had decided to do something, she’d never been one to give anyone a chance to talk her out of it.

And maybe, Gabrielle considered grimly over the course of the next eleven days, that was the problem - that Xena knew full well that Gabrielle stood a better chance than anybody of talking sense into her. Then again, Gabrielle was willing to admit that she herself hadn’t been too full of sense lately, so maybe that was the biggest problem of all.

Shame rushed over her in the long, lonely nights when her body was still enough that she couldn’t avoid thinking about it. Anger was quick on its heels, and so was the cold terror that made her heart pound and her mind race.

But the anger was the easier thing to deal with; anger didn’t freeze her where she lay wide-eyed and staring beyond the canopy of trees and the infinity of sky past even that; anger kept motion sparking in her limbs and a need burning behind her ribs so that there wasn’t room for anything else.

“You just left,” Gabrielle accused a phantom Xena more than once on the road. “How could you leave me?”
