Next month in Philly doesn't happen.
And neither does it in the three months after that.
After a year, then five more, Nancy chalked Philly up to being a pipe dream. A good idea steeped in the optimism of youth, a promise made with good intentions, but that will never come to fruition. They can want to meet up, old friends reconnecting, more than anything maybe, but that doesn't make it happen. You just can't go back in time. It's impossible.
Nothing will ever be the same as the relationships they forged with one another, battle tested and worn-in, but they can't ever be like they were, either.
Life, it just moves on. Fast.
Maybe they all should have listened to Ferris Bueller, and made the time to stop and look around at each other. But they didn't, and now here they are. She's nearing thirty. And Nancy can't remember the last time they were all in one place.
She's seen Robin. They've gotten together a handful of times over the years. She's seen Jonathan more frequently, paths crossing and then parting again. But she can't remember the last time she saw Steve.
Part of that is her fault. She doesn't like going home, back to Hawkins.
So, when Steve calls again out of the blue, doing a bit of prodding, they agree to try and settle on a date. One more time. When they finally pencil one in, it's not lost on her that this is further than they've ever gotten before when trying to make a plan to meet up.
Robin can't make it.
That's the latest update, and having it fall apart before it begins is really par for the course. They talk about postponing again, about canceling again, about putting it off longer. Nancy assumes Steve won't want to make the drive if Robin isn't going to be there. She knows Robin's his biggest draw, and he's got the longest distance to travel.
Still, somehow, happy in Hawkins. Different strokes for different folks.
Even if she can't wrap her head around that choice. She doesn't miss it. She misses the people, but the town? Not at all. She did her time. She's never going back without a good goddamn reason.
"Maybe we could try again next month," Nancy says, and Steve huffs out a breath.
"Again?"
The unexpected sound of disappointment in Steve's voice gives Nancy pause. That sound of hurt she knows intimately because she has caused it before. And she can't do it again.
She can't.
Maybe he needs this. Maybe he needs old friends, and she refuses to be the one to take that away from him if she can help it.
"Or we can still meet up. The three of us," she says, and somehow, she can hear his smile. "Robin can catch us at the next one. Three outta four ain't bad."
"A passing grade," Steve says, and she laughs. "A solid C."
"Look at you, knowing about passing grades now, Mr. Teacher."
She's teasing, and he knows it. Steve was never stupid, even if he liked to play dumb.
"I'll tell Jonathan," she says, and he hums in agreement. Like he doesn't quite believe her, and she thinks that's more than fair.
They are making an effort this time. They talk in round robin fashion. Playing a game of telephone, of phone tag. Cross-country calls, trying to get something in place. Catching up, bits and pieces at a time. Robin swears they can still stay with her uncle, but that seems weird, and other plans are lobbied about until Philly somehow morphs into the Jersey Shore. They'll save Philly for a time that Robin can join them. And after running the numbers, they decide they can swing a beach house rental on the Shore, and a weekend of relaxation.
That sounds more alluring than a musty basement. They aren't twenty anymore.
Steve's not in the classroom right now, school's out for summer, and as soon as the little league season wraps up, he's free. She's got plenty of vacation time saved up, and can write from anywhere. Jonathan sets his own schedule, and since they've planned ahead enough — shockingly — his calendar is clear.
He likes to keep busy.
Jonathan's first feature length film doesn't start filming until fall. Still an indie on a shoestring budget, but he's branched out from shorts and that's a big deal.
They're all free at the same time, and Nancy thinks, somehow, that this is really gonna happen.

Title is from London Rain (Nothing Heals Me Like You Do) by Heather Nova. The amount of the Dawson's Creek soundtrack songs I listened to while writing this. I can't even tell you. Totally the right time frame.
Will loved Indiana, he loved the hot humid summer. He loved the vibrance and life of the big city, the anonymity of it, the way it seemed to breathe with the hustle and bustle of daily life, like an entity of its own. You could be anyone you wanted to be in a big city. You could live a hundred different lives if you wanted to, and if the city was big enough, all of them running on parallel lines, so close but never touching. But the tiny town of Forkins, Washington was about as far you could get from a big city. And now, Will was stuck there.
or
Will Byers has just become the latest resident of Forkins, Washington. His life uprooted and he determined to leave for art college as soon as he can. However his curiosity surrounding Forkins most mysterious boy, Mike Wheeler, manages to keep him entertained enough to stay.
Insecurities get the best of you, but your partners are there to help.
You watch as they marvel over her - every angle, each inch. From her head to her toes, Nancy Wheeler is beautiful. And clad in pale pink lace panties with a matching bra and white garters - she’s looks plucked straight from some ethereal garden. You cling to your own baby blue set, palms sweaty, lower lip trembling. It’s not that you envy your girlfriend, no.
But you don’t look like her and it’s never been more obvious than now, standing in Steve Harrington’s hallway, watching through the gap in his bedroom door as they trace her skin with timid, fragile fingertip grazes. They both fought over her years ago, loved her through what you’ve all went through. No one ever fought over you, probably wouldn’t even care for you if you didn’t experience things together. Are you just personality? Formally, completely off their radars?
It’s not fair that you aren’t communicating this, and having these thoughts only makes you feel more isolated, guilty. You swallow the burning lump inside your jugular and force yourself to step away, immediately working back on your clothing in the bathroom and shoving your lingerie into your bag. You’ve got a plan already. They deserve to have the time and not let it be ruined by your baggage, or by having to reassure your insecurities. Once you reach his doorway, toes sunk into the soft carpet, you gently rasp your knuckles, before feeling as if you’re intruding by opening the door.
They’re completely engrossed in her, and you’d hoped they wouldn’t notice, but what you can’t grasp is that they were also waiting for you, baited breaths and excited heart rates. When you step into the room fully clothed and all eyes find yours, they frown, faces falling. Steve is the first to speak.
“I thought Nance said you two went shopping together? Where’s yours?”
You’ve thought this stuff before, especially once the intimacy started, but it’s staring you in the face more than ever before, and you aren’t sure if you can handle the way you’re trembling, throat quaking, bile rising, making you want to throw up. You’re in love with them, you are well aware. You shake your head, tossing on a smile that is genuine for the guys, for her. Because you’d love nothing more than to let it be about her tonight, but it wasn’t the agreed upon plan when you and Nancy visited the Indianapolis mall, and they’ll figure out something is wrong if you outright refuse. You motion to your shoulder bag, tongue burning with your lie.
“I actually forget my outfit at my house. Remember when went there to take our bags, baby?” You smile and Nancy looks confused, but nods at that fact.
Her maroon painted lips part. “But I thought you put yours in your bag? Are you sure?”
You follow through with your lie. “I am. That’s what took me forever, I did my makeup and stuff, then I had to dig through my bag, but I couldn’t find it. I’ll run home though, okay?”
It’s an automatic response from your three partners standing before you. “We will all go.”
“I’ll drive, too,” Steve says.
You shake your head. “I can drive home and get it, I don’t want anyone to have to pause because of me. Just twenty minutes tops, yeah?” Instead of waiting for an answer, you back out and close the door, springing down the hall and staircase.
Your lungs greedily suck in the cool evening breeze as you close the Harrington’s double front door behind you, feet slapping on the pavement to help you reach your car. Jonathan Byers is hot on your tail, hand splaying out above yours before you can open your driver’s door. “Hey —“
You swing your bag into his torso without thinking, heart beat dropping into your ass and slapping into your throat, adrenaline surfacing, fueled by past trauma with the things that went bump in the dark. He catches it with ease after your second swing, gripping your shoulder. Once you realize you’re safe, it molds into you hitting him by accident, and combines with your current mood. The tears find themselves flowing freely, unable to be hidden.
He’s intuitive, having figured you out the second you stepped into the room and lied to them. You were his best-friend before even started dating Nancy. And then you fell in love with Steve Harrington when he got with her, only to end up in love with Jonathan and Nancy when they began dating. It was a messy thing. Everyone finding feelings at various times.
It did not diminish anything, however.
He cups your neck’s nape and brings you into his chest as you apologize. There’s not a point in lying anymore. His voice is deep as he says it, that soft way that reminds you of a warm fire, a cold, fizzy drink that makes you dizzy, and even the ice cubes that he’d pinched between his teeth to trace your body with at Steve’s Fourth of July barbecue. He helps you by cupping your cheeks and bringing you into his sights, thumb wiping away your tears.
“You think you can’t be honest about stuff like that with us?”
“I didn’t want to ruin the mood or make Nancy feel like I’m just being a bitch —“
“Well, she doesn’t think that, but she is worried about you.” A strong but soft voice cuts you off. Nancy is clad in Steve’s robe, making her way towards you with him.
Jonathan rubs his palms up and down your shoulders, everyone now huddled together. Steve settles behind you, Nancy at your side, fingers pinching your chin. “Look at me. Right now.” You want to cry when you see the tears in her beautiful blue eyes. She’s got your full attention.
The boys share looks over your shoulder.
“I’ve never seen a more beautiful woman than you. The way you make me feel every single day, the first person to truly see me. To see all of us?” She motions to everyone around with a manicured hand.
She finds yours and turns you towards her, holding your grip with strength. “You don’t think we also compare ourselves sometimes? It happens, but it doesn’t mean a damn thing. Not when we know what we have. It’s something that no one can touch, not if we keep it safe.” Her lips purse as she brings your entwined hands to her chest, nostrils flaring.
“I know we’re all weird as hell, but there’s one thing that I’m sure of too,” Steve chimes in. “It’s that without you, our goofy little puzzle wouldn’t be complete.”
You’re still looking at Nancy as he says it, his defined palms lacing with Jonathan’s as they settle on you. She speaks again after a few breaths. “How about we go upstairs to Steve’s room and I’ll help you into your outfit, and we can be our weird little puzzle pieces together?” There’s a beautiful smirk that quirks in the corner of her mouth.
You agree.
~*~
Nancy helps you into your set, lets you balance on her to slide on your garters, and once she gets a good look at you, with you also seeing her up close — there’s a ravaging inferno blazing, boiling behind both your irises, pooling into your pupils. There’s less hesitation as she takes you into the room and both men turn, jaws unhinged. She clings to your hand and you two walk together. Your doubt settles at the wayside, your body joining them onto Steve’s new California king, and nothing matters but your weird little puzzle, finally complete.
When Jonathan told Nancy that he had developed feelings for Steve, Nancy had laughed. She shouldn't have, but she did.
"What?! Nancy!" Jonathan exclaimed in shock and hurt.
"No! I'm sorry! I shouldn't laugh," she giggled. "This is great!"
"It is?" He asked.
"Now, who's just another girl who thinks she's rebelling?!" Nancy exclaimed in a mocking voice.
"Oh god!" He groaned in realization. "I'm sorry!"
"Aren't you worried that you're going to turn out like your parents?" She asked, continuing to mock him.
"I said I was sorry!" He exclaimed.
"I think maybe you're trying too hard to be someone else, Jonathan," she said, as she pretended to look serious.
"It was a long time ago! Can't we just let this go?!" Jonathan yelled, blushing.
"Oh, honey, I am never letting this go," she said and burst into laughter again. "You're a hypocrite, Jonathan Byers!"
She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him soundly. She pulled away laughing.
"I hate you," he muttered.
"No, you don't," she said and straddled his thigh. "You know, there's nothing to be ashamed of, though, right?"
A couple of years ago, she would have resented him for all the things he said in those woods, but now that the shoe was on the other foot, she found that the resentment had been long since buried. Nancy had wondered if Jonathan had said those things back then out of fear of what he had started to feel for Steve.
"I know," Jonathan whispered and paused. "I love you."
"I love you, too. . .my rebel girl," Nancy said and smiled at the look on his face. "Oh, you like that, don't ya. . . Rebel?"
"Kinda," Jonathan whispered.
Nancy kissed him more deeply this time, running her fingers through his hair. She pulled away with a smile, tucking one of his hair behind his ear.
"Thank you for telling me," she said.
"Oh! Sorry!" They heard Steve yell as he entered the kitchen.
They weren't surprised to see him, considering this was his kitchen after all. The entire party had basically moved in while they figured all of this out, filling up the spaces of Steve’s big empty house and basically filling up Steve’s life.
"It's fine," Nancy said and looked encouragingly at Jonathan.
"Hey, Steve," Jonathan said and paused awkwardly for a moment.
"Yeah?"
"You, uh, got any room for me in that RV?" Jonathan asked.
"Oh, we had to give that back to the people we stole it from," Steve said.
"No, man," he laughed. "Not that RV. . .the other one."
"We don't have an - oh. OH!" Steve exclaimed, and his face split into a wide grin. "Oh, yeah! Definitely!"
He bounded over to them, so much like a golden retriever would, that Nancy expected to see a tail wagging behind him. Steve wrapped them up in a bone crushing hug. Nancy laughed and started telling him all about what they had been talking about. She was glad that Steve could see the humor in it as well.
"So. . .uh, rebel girl?" Steve asked in amusement.
"Shut up, bat boy," Jonathan said, and they both laughed.
"Oh, am I a boy just for the alliteration?" Steve asked.
"Of course," Jonathan said.
"The Adventures of Rebel Girl and Bat Boy," Nancy laughed.
"And who would you be?" Steve asked.
"The ace reporter always getting Rebel Girl and Bat Boy out of trouble, of course," Nancy said.
Nancy pulled her boys into a hug, feeling a sense of completion. This had been coming since the moment they fought that demogorgon together, she knew. Tomorrow was a new day, another day of fighting for their lives, but for right now, they could just be together. The start of something new.
I've just posted my first Stoncy fic, as a part of the Stranger Things Writers Guild rare pair fic swap, for @nomadic-wolf! I hope you'll like it!
This whole thing is based on that 0.5 second clip of Steve going to check on Nancy and Jonathan by the ambulances after the Battle of Starcourt, which has been living rent free in my head since s3 came out!

Summary under the read more:
“Wha— What?” Jonathan says with a breathy, disbelieving laugh, like he thinks Steve is playing a prank.
“I think you’re pretty,” Steve says, almost desperately, his mouth giving him no control over the words coming out. Jonathan’s eyes widen in shock, before darting to Nancy, who is watching them both with her mouth hung open.
He clamps his hand over his mouth to try and shut himself up before he says or does anything else stupid. He shakes his head, tries to shake himself out of it, this weird feeling in his body.
“Sorry, it’s the— I think it’s the drugs,” he says, muffled through his own fingers.
Or: It takes the Battle of Starcourt for Steve to talk to Nancy and Jonathan again, and it takes some Russian drugs for the truth to come out.
''Unholy'' song by Sam Smith, Kim Petras
Steve and Nancy are a rich successful, married couple.
Both of them are sleeping with the help [Jonathan]
But the rest of Hawkins doesn't know that
They only know that Steve and Jonathan are intimate with each other when they think no one can see them in public and that they're obviously sleeping together.
So the entire town thinks that Steve is cheating on his wife with Jonathan
While behind closed doors, Nancy and Steve are both sleeping with Jonathan at the same time and sharing him.
Imagine if Hawkins knew the real story.
Even if they did know the truth they'd still think of it as unholy.
Steve and Nancy don't care about the rumors and laugh about it.
In the meantime: They share Jonathan's body. Both on either side of him in bed kissing and sucking either side of his neck at the same time while running their hands all over him teasing him, sharing him.
And if the Duffers hadn't failed us I'd be able to make a video of it with this song. But ofc they didn't give us Stonathan/Stoncy scenes or sex scenes with them. So you'll just have to imagine it. For now its just head canon and what I think of every time I listen to this song again over the last 4 months. And I find it a waste to have all these Stoncy/Stonathan thoughts and not be able to share them with you. I tried my best to keep this rated PG. Usually its more XXX.
This can also apply to when they're still in school together and Steve and Nancy were just dating/not married. But I figured this fit more with the song. It works either way.
If you don't like Stancy, then just think of it like this: they got married for appearances, but are really in love with Jonathan.
'He left his kids at home' is ofc referring to the party.
rated T | 1.5k | post-canon, new year’s eve, accidental kissing
Nancy thinks there’s a reality in which she could’ve mistakenly kissed her ex-boyfriend in front of her current boyfriend on New Year's Eve and all three of them could’ve had a good laugh about it after. Probably, that could’ve been this reality, except Steve has a tight look on his face, and Jonathan’s face is very red, and Nancy is pretty sure she’s massively fucking this up.
Characters(s): Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers, Tommy Hagan, Carol Perkins, Barbara Holland
Pairing(s): Jonathan Byers/Steve Harrington/Nancy Wheeler
Summary: It was love at first sight. One look at Nancy Wheeler was enough for Steve Harrington to fall head over heels. He enlists the help of Jonathan Byers to help send love letters to her. Over time they develop a friendship and while Steve's affections for Nancy never falter, he begins to think he might be able to feel this way for two people at once.
