Can you do Itachi x oblivious reader who's younger like I want an age gap
“Tomorrow’s another day” Shisui gives his friend a pat on the back in hopes of lightening his mood. He just witnessed his dear friend Itachi struggle to get a simple 'what are you doing?' and 'how are you?' out to you and instead said 'what are you?'
Luckily, you have a sweet personality with Itachi and you laughed it off, telling him in a joking way 'I'm human, like you.'
Itachi, embarrassed from his screw-up, simply nods and lets you go off in your own way
It's always entertaining for Shisui to see his friend talk to you. Itachi was known to be amicable with the villagers, kind with his brother, and scary as hell to encounter with enemies (he's a flee on sight, after all)...so to see him become a jumbled, mumbling, stuttering mess around you was definitely something he didn't encounter every day
"Let's get some dango, we deserve it after dealing with the Hidden Sand." Shisui successfully gets Itachi to stop overthinking his interaction with you and back to his calm-looking state
Itachi still thinks about the interaction, as he does with almost all of your conversations.
He’s grateful that you still give him the time of day after all the embarrassing things he’s said in the past. He can’t help but continue to seek your attention out, even if it makes his feelings for you obvious (especially considering that he doesn’t seek anyone’s attention aside from his brother or friend, and on the rare occasion a family member). It made it easy for him to talk to you since you and Sasuke were friends as kids, but now that you and Sasuke were more grown up, it’s more difficult for him to talk to you on your own.
Originally, he had admiration for you with the amount of patience and love you showed him and his brother. Whenever you would prepare some lemonade for them or patch them up after they trained, you would plague Itachi’s mind for the rest of the day. His heart will beat faster if he thought too hard on the things you said to him that day, and to stop himself from overthinking things, Itachi would read or seek out Shisui to distract him
It didn’t take long for Shisui to realize that it’s not feelings of admiration, and he knows it won’t take Itachi much longer to come to that realization
What he didn’t know was how long Itachi was going to keep his feelings hidden from you.
Shisui thinks it’s because of the age gap, and maybe Itachi thinks it’s weird to like someone that’s around the same age of his younger brother, but it’s not like the age gap is big enough for it to be concerning
While treating his friend to dango, he decides to talk to him to see if he has any plans to say anything
“Didn’t you see what happened earlier? I can’t even talk to them without looking like an idiot.”
Shisui gives him his green tea dango to make Itachi feel better
“Try doing things for them instead. No words needed, just actions.” He suggests, and is pleased to see Itachi nod his head
“Good idea.”
For the following few weeks, Itachi tries to cross paths with you when he can, but chickens out as soon as you make eye contact. He’ll wave at you and greet you from afar but his hearts beating faster with each step you take towards him that he flees before he gets a heart attack
This goes on for almost three weeks. Itachi feels bad about the short interactions (and definitely is left with craving more of your time) and decides that the upcoming festival is the perfect time to casually get you to spend time with him
You agree when he asks you, and he doesn’t know if he’s more relieved that you said yes or that he even was able to ask without wanting to run away
The day of the festival comes and Itachi’s heart drops to his stomach when he sees you waiting for him by the entrance. The smile that graces your lips has his stomach flipping. A smile all for him.
He would treat you to any food that piqued your interest and would refuse to even hear your arguments of splitting it or letting you pay
“I invited you to this and I plan on making it the best experience for you.” If he had been looking at you when he said that he would have seen the blush on your face
The festival gets busier as the day goes on and the conversation flows naturally between you two. The crowds get bigger, and you loop your arm around his. Itachi straightens his posture when you do so, feeling proud that you feel comfortable enough around him to be this close. He wonders if he’s feeling warm because of the amount of people or because of your proximity, but for the sake of not making himself blush, he blames it on the crowd.
He’ll glance at you from time to time, offering to stop at certain shops that you seem to be interested in. He makes mental notes of the comments you make on things or anything that you pick up. Any little bit of information that you share he tries to remember.
There’s a moment where you stop by the restrooms and he’s waiting outside for you. He sends a clone to get some of the things that REALLY seemed to interest you.
What he doesn’t expect is to see you coming from the opposite direction you left in
With his favorite sweets in your hands
His sharingan almost activates itself when you hand one of the portions to him, and he really can’t fight the blush now
You’ve officially left him speechless. He’s looking at you, the words ‘thank you’ caught at his throat. The two of you are just standing there, staring at each other with your desserts in hand
For a moment he thinks he will lean in and kiss you, and you’d be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t think the same thing
Fireworks are literally going off behind you but you two still share this moment
“Thank you” he finally says, breaking eye contact with you before he gives in to his urges
“I should be thanking you.” You find a bench to sit at and enjoy the firework show above you
“For what?”
“For today. It was nice to be able to spend some time with you.”
He distracts himself with the firework show above him. It feels like they’re going off inside of him too at your words
“It’s always nice to spend time with you.” He’s surprised with how honest he’s being. It definitely helps his nerves that he’s eating his comfort food. He wants to add I wish I could have more after but doesn’t want to say it just yet. It’s a sweet enough moment he doesn’t want to ruin.
The festival comes to an end and Itachi walks you home, despite living on the other side of town
“Thank you for today, Itachi. I had a good time.” You smile up at him from your doorstep. It’s the perfect angle, he thinks. The extra two inches or so lets your mouth level out with his chin. He could lean in and kiss you. He could end this perfect day with the kiss of his life. He speaks up before his train of thought derails further into dreamland.
“Don’t mention it.” He smiles at you sweetly, “I had a good time too.” He wonders if it would be too soon to ask you to spend the day with him again, but you’re turning around and unlocking your front door before he has a chance to do so.
He goes home that night, feeling oddly optimistic about his ongoing predicament
He doesn’t have the courage to gift you the items that you looked at earlier in the day, so he decides to gift it to you anonymously. He wraps the presents so neatly (it looks like it was done by a professional because come on, it’s Itachi).
He won’t give them to you all at once. He knows you love surprises and thinks that one surprise each day that you’re not doing too well will be enough to lift your spirits. Even if you don’t know who the gifts are from, it’s enough for him to think that it’ll make you feel better when you need it. It makes him feel better to think that he’s there for you when you need it.
There’s one thing he repeats to himself at the end of each day that you’re not his: Tomorrow’s another day.
i would like to thank @softiitachi for helping me work this out :D
