guys im actually going wild over this. imagine youre sae itoshi and your semi-estranged younger brother is dating a man who looks just like you. and not just any man. another ng11, your rival, one of the only people who comes close to you in terms of skill.

How exactly does Sae emotionally incest Rin?

Well, Rin didn’t originally want to be second to Sae. He first and foremost wanted to be the world’s best by himself.

However, Sae immediately changed Rin’s mind to be the second best after himself. He makes Rin dependent on him, intentionally or not. He manipulated Rin’s ego from the very start to be centered around himself.

This happens in other aspects too. Rin asks if he’s weird and Sae’s response to it, again, is to make it about himself. Asking Rin, “Well if you are weird you’d be like me, don’t you want to be like your big bro?” Again, getting Rin to center who he fundamentally is as a person to be directly tied to Sae. Blurring the lines of who Rin is and who Sae is, so they’re completely connected.

And the real kicker is that after all of this, getting Rin to tie his existence to Sae, Sae punishes him for it. He tells Rin his dependence is disgusting. He made Rin like this and when faced with the consequences he victim blames.

This is how Sae emotionally incests Rin. He erodes their boundaries, doesn’t let Rin develop to be emotionally dependent, and then punishes his feelings, feelings that would not exist had Sae not done this. Rin is enmeshed with his brother, because Sae made Rin dependent. And no, it doesn’t matter if Sae did it intentionally, it still happened, and Rin is still traumatized, it is still Sae’s fault.
