Fuki comin’ through! . Some leaves already popping up while a main stem gets ready to explode with flowers 🤗 . Fuki flowers before most, & this variety grows leaves 12-18” / 30-45cm wide—though I wish I had the giant fuki with 3’ / 100cm-wide leaves 😮 Stems & leaves are edible 🥳 . Partial shade preferred, & keep out of hot, direct sun. These are on a southish slope but up against a fence so hopefully will survive a California summer here where temps can get over 100°F / 38°C 🥵 . Growing outside, uncovered in winter is a slooooooow process, but Tokyo Bekana is doing just as well as the Red Russian Kale 👍 . First time growing Tokyo Bekana, & so far no bugs, birds, or brodents nibbling at it. Maybe the near-freezing nights help—will be interesting to compare with spring & summer plantings as well 🤔 .
