いったい - “what on earth” “what the heck”

一体 (ittai) adds a sense of urgency or emphasis, like “on earth,” “exactly,” or “what the heck.” It shows that the speaker is puzzled or baffled by something.

あれは一体何なんだ ‘Are wa ittai nan nan da’ “What on earth is that?”

一体何が起こったの？ ’Ittai nani ga okotta no? What on earth happened?

田中くんは一体どこに行ったんだ？ ’Tanaka kun wa ittai doko ni itta nda? Where on earth did Tanaka go?

一体誰がそんなことを言ったんだ？ ’Ittai dare ga sonna koto o itta nda?’ Who in the world said such a thing?
