Game Reviews: Ittle Dew
The Zelda parallel is immediately obvious, but what I appreciate is that the game knows its limits and focuses on recreating a specific part of the Zelda experience: the dungeons.
There's very little exploration, the combat is not exciting (to the point i think it probably could have been mostly cut), and there are only 3 items to find. A 40 hour action-adventure game this is not. But the game really squeezes a lot out of those 3 items to make some fun block-pushing puzzles across a few different environments. I'm rather fond of how the castle is a place you keep going back to, unlocking more of it as you gain the items and gain proficiency with how they function. I always like a central location in a game.
I didn't do it myself, but I can appreciate that there are multiple routes to beating the game with different combos of 2 of the 3 items. Adds some replayability and a layer of challenge to fully figuring out the mechanics. Plus the graphics are cute looking hand-drawn sprites, and the story and characters have a sense of humor that makes me chuckle but never makes me roll my eyes. I enjoyed my time with this one, and look forward to trying the sequel at some point.
7 outta 10
