Notgeld of the Week #29! (1/27/2026)

A crisp 50 Pf. from the city of Itzehoe

Itzehoe, located in northern Germany in the state of Holstein, has some very interesting interesting and beautiful notgeld. This note features a tale of a hunter surrounded by a little poem. Both written in, you guessed it, Plattdeutsch.

The poems around the outside read: "fifty pfennigs aren't worth a lot, you now have a herring tail." (I'm not sure what it means other than 50 Pf. could only buy you fish scraps). The second poem reads: "Colourful is the paper money, colourful it goes into the world"

The big text above the image says: "Fifty Pfennig! Listen to this rag from Itzehoe." ("rag" maybe to poke fun at the note itself being worthless)

The story, in the text box on the right of the picture, is as follows:

Soldier: By the devil, that's the beautiful sutler from Blasewitz!

The sutler, in return says to the Soldier: and that's the lazy beggar who lost all his father's money partying!

(A sutler is a merchant who follows around army camps to sell them goods.)

Itzehoe Station, Schleswig-Holstein. August 2019

I wanted to sketch an elegantly dressed older woman standing in front of these bombed coal waggons. I was being as discrete as possible so she wouldn’t notice, when her train pulled up in front of me. The train stayed put for 20 minutes. By the time it left and I could continue drawing, my train arrived. As I sat in my train, I slowly realised that it also stayed put for 20 minutes, so I could continue sketching.

Man weiß gar nicht wo man anfangen soll. Eine komplette Packung Toastbroat? 16 Eier!? Warum Nürnberger in Itzehoe? Und dann natürlich noch “Bei Bedarf eine gute Handvoll Erdnussflips hinzufügen.” Ein Satz den ich ganz gerne nie gelesen hätte. Zumal es sicher Menschen gibt, die Erdnussflips mögen. Und auch Menschen, die sie nicht mögen. Es soll sogar Menschen geben, denen Erdnussflips aber mal komplett am Arsch vorbeigehen, aber es gibt mit Sicherheit niemanden mit Bedarf an Erdnussflips. Wisset auf jeden Fall, dass, wenn die Nächte lang und kalt werden in Schleswig-Holstein, irgendwo in Itzehoe jemand in seiner oder ihrer Küche steht und dieses bizarre Allerlei, wahrscheinlich im Allerleingang, verdrückt. Trotz des Video-Tipps aber vermutlich mit Weinen. Guten Hunger (Weiß jemand ob Feline aus Itzehoe kommt?)!
