Death provides no salvation. The pitch-black malice in this world won’t disappear even with death. Why? That’s because the me who’s living right here, right at this moment, is saying this now. I lost everything. Been stepped on. Been violated! Been tossed aside like fucking trash! But even then, I’m still living in this hell! This shitty fucking hell called “reality”! Gian: Hahahahahahahaha! Hahahahahaha! Gian: I’m Giancarlo. The me who was so full of himself from getting called things like “Lucky Dog”… is dead. He died, in this very hell! Wakazou to Ore

A short Ivan x Gian story detailing an encounter the two have prior to their escape of Madison Prison. Originally published in Cool-B magazine.

微妙に出遅れたせいで、食堂は一番混雑してる状況だった。俺は不味いエサ、良く言うなら刑務所のランチ、のトレーを片手に立ち止まる。

見渡す限り、食堂の椅子はシマシマ囚人服で埋まっている。

どっか空かねえかな——視線を流すと、時々、知らないヤツと目が合った。

「………………」

大抵は、自然に目線が外れるけども。時たま新鮮な反応が、混じっている。

ほんの一週間前にはなかったそれは多分、興味とか疑問とか畏怖とか……お、今のヤツ、頭下げてきた。どうも慣れない。

——今まで、生まれついての運の良さと、脱獄マニアってことでしか知られちゃいなかった俺、「ラッキードッグ」ジャンカルロ。それが、こうしてムショに収監中の身でありながら、とあるコーサ・ノストラ——世間じゃマフィアなんて呼ばれてる——デイバンの街を仕切る『CR:5』の新幹部に昇格したことは、少しずつムショの住人達に噂で広まっていた。

けど、ほとんどの囚人連中は、それ以上は知らない。知る者は皆、組織の掟に従い、口を閉ざしているから。もしコーサ・ノストラの構成員が沈黙の掟を破れば、死だ。

その秘密とは、俺が間もなく他の幹部達を連れてここを脱獄すること、それが成功した暁には『CR:5』のボスの座を手に入れる、ということ——。

視界の端に、最近になって話すようになったヤツが、皿を空にしたのが映った。視線が合う。

「空いたぜ」

立ち上がりながら、ルキーノが空いた場所を視線で示してくる。

「ああ、サンキュー」

礼を口にした時には、ルキーノのでかい身体は既に、俺の横を通り過ぎるところだった。

……横柄というか俺様な態度にも、だいぶ慣れた。俺よりも先任の幹部の一人、ルキーノ。俺が、ここから連れ出す必要のある四人の幹部の内の一人だ。その背中から目線を外し、俺は空いた椅子へと腰を下ろした。

エサをかっ込んでいると、ほどなくして向かいのヤツが食べ終えて席を立つ。そこへ急いで座り込んできたヤツの顔を、見るとはなしに見て——

「げっ……」

声に出したのは、半分わざとだ。

俺に気付いていなかった相手が、その声で俺を見て、一気に表情をゆがめる。

「テメーか！なんだその失礼な態度は、そりゃコッチの台詞だ！」

イヴァンから予想通りの反応が返ってきたことに、俺は軽い満足を覚えた。

「……あー、元から不味いメシが、更に……」

わざとらしく溜息を吐いて呟くと、

「んだとォ？挨拶はなしかジャン！おい、無視すんな！」

「……チャオ」

「違うだろッ！」

簡単に沸騰するから、イヴァンは面白い。

こんな単純で、よくウチの組織の最年少幹部になったもんだ。ベルナルドに言わせれば、「あれでイヴァンはなかなか狡猾冷静な男だぜ、おひとよしのお前よりもな」……らしいが、俺にはそんな部分は全く感じられない。

まぁ、イヴァンは『CR:5』幹部の中じゃ、昇進したのも組織入りすらも一番最近、更に最年少とくる。幹部中、最下位の扱いだ。そこへ、万年ヒラ構成員と思っていた俺が急にボスの指名で、最先任幹部だったカヴァッリ爺様の跡を継ぎ新たな幹部に——それどころか、任務成功の際には次のボス——なんて話の流れだ。そりゃ、野心バリバリのイヴァンとしちゃ面白くないことばっかりでイラつくだろう……と、これも大半、ベルナルドの受け売り。

黙ってる俺の前、イヴァンはメシも食わず、ファックだのシットだの食事の席向けじゃない雑言を次々ぶつけてきてるが、無視。

……しかし、コイツが一番気に入らなく思っているのは、俺がイヴァンを飛び越してボスになるかもしれないってことだ。不満と文句は、最終的に毎回そこに辿り着く。

「……なんでテメーみたいなやつが、この俺を差し置いて……！」

「それ以上はここじゃ言うなよ？分かってるたぁ思うが」

イタリア語に切り替えて素早く制止すると、

「あ？今、なんつったんだ！？英語でもっぺん言え！」

……そうだ、コイツはイタリア語は不得手だった。秘密の会話もできやしねぇ……それでもコーサ・ノストラの幹部かっての。

俺の、作ったモノじゃない心底からのゲンナリした表情に煽られたらしいイヴァンが、更にファックンシットを撒き散らす。うるさい。まあ、ヤバい発言は回避できたから良い、のか……？

「お前ら、またやってるのか？」

声と共に、俺の肩を叩く手の感触。

「……よっす、ベルナルド」

げっ、という顔で、イヴァンが罵詈雑言を止めた。カヴァッリ爺様の引退で筆頭幹部となったベルナルドに、イヴァンは頭が上がらないのだ。

「ベルナルド、今からメシ？さっき居なかったけど」

ここに来る途中、ベルナルドの房を覗いたが姿が見えなかった。で、どっか行ってんのか、と思って一人で食堂まで来たんだよな。

「弁護士の面会が来てたのさ」

「差し入れ貰ったなら分けてくれよ」

俺とベルナルドは昔からのツレみたいなもんで、おかげで色々と助かっていた。

「ん、後で持ってってやるよ」

居心地悪げな顔でイヴァンが、エサを口に運び始める。

「……それじゃあジャン、また後でな」

「うーっす」

空いてる席を探し、ベルナルドが去っていく。

俺は、イヴァンの罵詈雑言が再開される前にと、その機に乗じて席を立った。

自分の房に戻って、煙草をふかす。ここの隣の房がベルナルドの房、そんで向かいがイヴァンの房だ。

イヴァンが帰ってきて絡んでくる前に、この一服を終えれっかな……？

——俺に例の命令書が届く前から、イヴァンは妙に俺につっかかってくると感じていたが、最近は、ギャーギャーわめく姿しか見てない気すら、する。

あいつが選ばれし幹部——カポ・レジームの一員なことを、たまに忘れそうになる。

以前から外部との交渉役であり、今回の件で最上位幹部となったベルナルド。表のシノギを取り仕切っているルキーノ。最強の実戦部隊を率いているというジュリオ。そしてイヴァン。それから、なにかわかんない理由で選ばれた、俺。

カヴァッリ爺様の引退で、『CR:5』は若い幹部のみになった。

イヴァンは俺より３つも年下だ。それだけの若さで、イタリア純血の名家の出身とかでもなく、幹部に選ばれたというのは……相当の実力と貢献、そして野心に裏打ちされている筈だ。今後の、塀の外に出てからのことも考えると、いじると面白いヤツなんて思ってる場合じゃない。

……なのに、顔を見るとついからかってみたくなるから、困ったものだった。

アイツの顔を見ると、つい、かまいたくなるんだよな……。

——なんか俺、最近イヴァンのことを良く考えてるなと、ふと気付く。

誰も見てないのに俺は肩をすくめ、短くなった煙草の火を消した。

「おい、ジャン。さっきの話の続きだがよ——」

そんな台詞と共にイヴァンが房の前に現れたのは、まぁ、予想範囲内だった。

イヴァンは……冷静を装っているつもりらしかった。房の中にコイツを迎え入れてやるのも、わざわざ外に出て相手をすんのも面倒そうだな……。

俺は、のっそり立ち上がり、鉄格子の近くへと移動する。檻越しの会話で済ませよう。

しつこく怒っている様子が透けて見える。続きというのは、食堂で中断された会話の続き、だろうか。ベルナルドの登場で一度リセットされたかも、とも思ってたんだが……しつこいぜ。

「え？ さっきって、いつだよ？」

わざと言ってやれば、

「さっきだよ、さっき！」

案の定なっていっての。

「……お前、いい加減、言えよ。どうやって、俺達を出し抜いた……！？」

「だーかーら。何度も言ってるけど、俺にもわかんねーっての」

周囲に人の気配は無かったが、一応、他人の耳を懸念して、俺達は何のことかを伏せたまま会話を進める。

ボスのあの命令書が届いてから、毎日恒例になってきている会話内容だ。イヴァンが俺に探りを入れ……いや訂正、直球で疑問をぶつけてきて……、俺は「答えを知らない」と返す。毎回毎回。不毛だ。

そんだけ焦るほど、俺が突然出てきたのがコイツにとって苦痛なんだろうな。そんな態度をあからさまに示すのは、幹部の中でコイツだけだった。

「怒りかりしてんなよ、もっとおっきく構えないと威厳ってモンが感じられないぜ？」

また、つい、挑発を投げてしまう。

イヴァンの眉がピクッと跳ね、あ、からかい過ぎたか——と思った瞬間、

「この野郎！」

鉄格子越しに腕が伸びてきた。

その手は、俺の首筋のチョーカーか、襟元を狙ったようだった。

だが俺は咄嗟に、片方の腕を、防御するように首元に引き寄せていた。

結果、イヴァンの手は、俺の手首を掴む。

瞬間、強い力と、ヤツの体温を感じた。

ぎゅっ、と握りつぶすように握力が込められ、グイッと引っ張られ——。

だが突然、力が緩んだ。引き寄せる動きも止まり、俺の手は、鉄格子を抜ける手前で止まる。

え、なんでだ……？

「くっ……」

イヴァンの悔しげな表情に、一瞬遅れて理解する。

俺にケガをさせたら、脱獄マニアと呼ばれる俺の技量を損うかもしれない、と考えたんだろう。俺のワザの首尾は、他の幹部の進退、場合によっては生死にも影響を及ぼす。ケガしたせいで手先が狂って……なんて可能性は充分有り得るからな。

鉄格子を挟んで、睨み合う——なにコレ、先に目を逸らした方が負けとか、そういうヤツ？

イヴァンは黙って、何もしない。ただ、俺の手首を少し強めに握っているだけだ。

「…………」

「…………」

……腕は一応、動かせる。

俺はゆっくり、自分の手を顔の横の方へと引っ張った。イヴァンから取り戻そうとするように。

だがヤツの指は、俺の手首を掴んだまま外れる気配がない……おい、どうやったら離してくれる？

このまま、いつまでも鉄格子越しに俺の手掴んでても、不毛だぜ——？

それを口にしても、通じないだろうことは明白だった。

「イヴァン……？」

反応はない。

俺は少し考えて——もう少し、自分の顔の方に、己の手を引き寄せた。

そして、イヴァンの指に噛みついた。

関節を歯に挟む。皮のすぐ向こうに骨の感触。

男の指を甘噛みするのは、生まれて初めてだ。

「っ……」

見開かれるイヴァンの瞳。視線は外れないまま。まだ離さないか。

俺は、ほとんど無意識に、舌を動かしていた。イヴァンの指の側面を、ぞろりと舐め上げる。一度、二度。

「なっ……！」

イヴァンが動揺した声を上げ、腕を引いた。途中、するっと、俺の手首に絡んでいた指が逃げていく。視線も逃れた。

目を逸らしたのは、向こうが先だった。

「……ば、馬っ鹿野郎、何しやがる！？」

イヴァンは、俺に噛まれた指を、もう片方の手でかばうように隠す。

また、視線が合う。焦っているのか、まばたきが速い。

「大声出すと看守が来るぜ？」

何、真っ赤になってんだか。ちょこっと舌、這わせたくらいで。

にやりと笑ってみせると、イヴァンはカッときて言葉に詰まった顔をして——結局、無言で足早に去っていった。

「……チャオ」

俺の声は、イヴァンの耳に届かなかったかもしれない。

イヴァンが居なくなると、微妙に後悔した。

そうした時には嫌悪感はなかったが。ヤツの肌に触れた自分の舌が、口の中で落ち着かない。いつもと違う調子のヤツの声も、耳に残っていた。

気分を変える為、廊下にペッと唾を吐き捨てようとして——イヴァンが去ったのとは逆方向に、人が立っていたことに気付いた。

「っ……、ジュリオ？」

驚きを押し隠して、ジュリオの顔を見る。

「……はい」

呟くような声と真っ直ぐな視線。

一つ年下の幹部で、他の誰より得体の知れない男。さっきのイヴァンとのやりとりを見られたのは別に構わないが、ほんの少し、バツの悪い気がした——だって今の今まで、気配感じなかったぜ？

「お前、いつから？」

「さっきから……、です」

それ答えになってないぜ、と思ったが、口に出すのは止めた。

「……また」

掛ける言葉を迷っている内に、ジュリオは軽く頭を下げて立ち去っていく。

俺は、軽く息を吐いた。

毒気を抜かれたというか……唾を吐き捨てる気も、失せていた。

残り時間は少ない。

分かっていること、やるべきことは、幹部五人揃ってこの刑務所から脱獄すること——それが、俺の成功へのチケットだ。

ベルナルド、ルキーノ、ジュリオ、そしてイヴァン——一癖も二癖もある仲間達の顔を思い浮かべ、俺は首の骨を鳴らした。

Yo~ long time no post any Lucky Dog thang. I remember I promised someone I’ll post more Lucky Dog stuff. Sorry for the long long delay. Actually, this was for @terracannon876′s collabo-fanbook. I think I drew this around October 2014. The contest is also over so I think it’s now ok to post this publicly. I really love Ivan and Gian coz they’re so funny! This comic might be fluffy and corny as hell but if you have played the game or at least know the “Best End” for Ivan’s route, this comic can be interpreted quite differently. Well, it was on purpose lol Ahhh~ the good times. Ivan is such a pure-hearted crybaby I love him! <3
