So, I was getting my covid test through the college, and this one guy decided to jokingly call me out for not using the "accessible" path: "We spent thousands of dollars setting up the tent just for you!"
No, you didn't.
1.) I don't owe you any particular presentation or stereotype as a disabled person. In todays condition, with today's mobility aid, I felt it easier to walk up a few stairs rather than take a longer path.
2.) You didn't build it for me. You had to build it because you created a covid testing procedure that some people may find inaccessible, because you built a building that's inaccessible. You built it because the law obligated you to, not out of any goodwill toward me.
3.) If you had set this up for me, you should've asked me. Or any other disabled person. Or a lawyer. Any of us would've told you that the tent doesn't make the testing process accessible. Your nose blowing station is blocking the accessible parking, making me walk farther, and preventing me from using my wheelchair if I wanted to (no room to get it out of the car). Covid testing procedures rely on single-file, socially-distanced lines; using the tent would require me to double-back over the queue, putting me and everyone else in line at risk. The heavy doors over the large bump at the end of the tent is difficult for some disabled people to open. And what about those with non-physical disabilities? How do you support those who are have vision impairments? Are hard of hearing? Have sensory differences?
An actually accessible path would be incorporated into the same procedure that everyone uses. It would include disabled voices during the planning process and building stages. I cannot stress enough how every event, organization, or project should have an Accessibility Director who’s job it is to think about disabled needs, and who can easily be contacted for questions or input.
