I think we learn most about ourselves when we’re alone, disconnected, surrounded by calmness, silent, and open. I find the most success in figuring out my life in these quiet, alone times, unsaturated by the greed and selfishness we are surrounded by daily. On one hand, it is supremely disappointing to me, seeing how addicted we are to our electronics. We enslaved ourselves; denying our creativity and limiting our imagination for the opportunity to stand on our digital soapboxes, spew our personal, political, and religious rhetoric, and isolate ourselves further and further away from actual human contact, all for a thumbs up validation. On the other hand, I am continuously amazed and inspired by what we refer to in the islands as aloha spirit, the kindness of strangers, the human will to do the right thing. In this year alone, I have seen true selflessness with genuine care for fellow inhabitants of this earth multiple times. There is absolutely no limit to what people can do when they support each other, good or bad, which is a bit unsettling but equally motivating. I often wonder what beauty we could create if we collectively decided to make decisions with our fellow people in mind instead of only ourselves. I don’t know where this rant is going. Stray thoughts for the evening. I suppose. Once again, I am humbled by the generosity of people, and supremely grateful for the friends in my life, who really have become family to me. Lock your doors and protect yourselves because there are horrible people breaking into houses and stealing Christmas presents, jewelry, money, and tv’s. Take care of yourselves, and each other.
