A pheasant tailed jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus) in Asia
by ezchou
This is a chick of a Jacana, a type of bird often called a "lily-trotter" or "lotusbird".
Since jacanas live on lakes they have to be able to walk across very flimsy floating vegetation. Their big feet can do this because they act like snowshoes, distributing the birds’ weight across a wide surface. This earned African jacanas the nickname “lily trotter.” Jacanas are found in tropical areas around the world.
He walks on water.
eggs of african and northern Jacanas
female Jacanas are larger than males and several species maintain harems of males in the breeding season, with males solely responsible for incubating eggs and taking care of the chicks.
they breed on floating vegetation during the rainy season. their moult is related to their ability to breed opportunistically based on the availability of rains.

This bird moves easily across the floating vegetation thanks to its unique attributes. Their feet have long over-developed toes that allow them to spread their weight evenly and effectively. Jacanas hide from predators by staying underwater, using their bill as a snorkel.
