Jack sat in the near darkness perched precariously atop one of the swinging cages. He tapped his staff listlessly against the metal, the echoing sound staccato and annoying, drawing out darkness from the darkness. As the shadows swirled closer, encircling the boy, Jack laughed callously.
“I wonder how the other spirits would think, if they knew why you spend so much time down here in the dark?”
“Well, presumably they would think I like darkness.” Pitch’s wry reply sprung out from the dark, surprisingly close to Jack, quiet enough to avoid adding to the echoing clatter. “Is that not an assumed trait for the Bogeyman to have?”
Jack continued to hit the cage with his staff. Tap tap tap. Clang clang clang. “I think the only thing the Bogeyman is meant to do is to scare children. And I’m sure you do a lot of that down here. What with all the kids I see.”
“Are you inferring that you would rather I go up to the surface again?” Pitch’s yellow eyes were about a foot away in the dark. “Why Jack, surely you can’t be that bored.”
Tap tap tap.
“If you could get to the surface you’d be there by now already.” Jack grinned into the dark, assuming Pitch was in the general direction of his grin. “I’m not the only one who knows that.”
“If you are referring to your dear Guardians, you are remiss to think that they could keep me in line.” Pitch spat with vehemence.
“So you’re down here by choice, is that it?” Jack asked, casually frosting the metal of the cages, lowering the temperature of the room.
“Why are you down here Jack?” Pitch stepped out of the shadows, regarding Jack with a pensive stare. “Again? Isn’t one visit enough for you? What’s keeping you down here, in the dark? Alone and frightened, the only child I have here to scare, since that is the only thing I am meant to be doing apparently.”
“Oh, I’m not scared Pitch.” The tapping continued. Tap tap tap tap. “I’m not scared of you.”
Spindly shadow fingers curled around the end of the staff, stopping it’s infuriating metronome, and real warm grey fingers curled around Jack’s wrists, holding them both in a punishing grasp, where they could wreak no mischief.
“We’ll see about that.”
