WHEN: July, 2022.

It was hot, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way when it came to the Summer Bash. Years ago when Rafael had first arrived to town, he had admired the way that the small community came together for a long weekend, a few performances, some good food. To watch it grow and change and adapt to the times had been nothing short of fascinating, and he was proud to be in a position where he could give back, now, sponsoring a rather large giveaway with his company. Although that did mean standing under one of those white canopy tents in the heat, trying to convince people that they needed a brand new Jeep -- because who didn’t? As he saw someone approach, he pushed his best ‘business man here to win you over’ smile, lifting a hand in greeting. “Can I interest you in throwing your name into our raffle?”

WHO: Josh & Jacob -- @jacobhartland​

WHERE: Summer Bash.

WHEN: July, 2022.

This was one of Josh’s favorite weeks in town. The delicious scent of hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, kids running through sprinklers, adults buying fun decorations for their porches and listening to the local bands... everyone was happy, and that included himself. Although he had a few things to check off his bucket list that week, they were things he could do over time, bit by bit. And right now? He just wanted to be a kid again, which is why he didn’t hesitate to turn to the person next to him with a wide grin. “You’re going to get in on this, right?” he asked, watching as one brave man threw himself down the slide, splashing into the pool at the end. “It’s a ton of fun!”

WHO: Stelly & Jake -- @jacobhartland​

WHERE: Emergency Services Carnival.

WHEN: June, 2022.

Stelly hadn’t met a game yet that they couldn’t win, or didn’t blow through far, far too much money to count while trying. Although they didn’t really need a gigantic stuffed animal to take home, or a goldfish, there was a slight determination to not let the week go by without making sure that both of those things were in her room by the time the last trailer pulled out of the parking lot. Which led them to a balmy summer evening, standing at the edge of the dart throwing game, looking at the balloons that they were going to absolutely decimate. But not before doing a little trash talking to the person who had just approached the booth. “Are you any good at this game?” they asked, looking over their shoulder, “’cuz I’m about to win that gigantic stuffed snake.”

WHO: Cage & Jake -- @jacobhartland​

WHERE: Hideaway Market.

WHEN: June, 2022.

Lunch time. Most days, that meant eating a sandwich out of his pre-packed lunchbox on the job site, but that particular day, he had been lucky enough to work in the shop, which meant that he could sneak off to Sweet Talk and grab a pastry and a cup of his favorite coffee from the kiosk right next door to Creekside. That was where he was at the moment, sitting at one of the outdoor tables where he could keep an eye on anyone coming and going from his own business, pastry in one hand, coffee cup on a stack of napkins. Which, of course, always ended in disaster, as evidenced when he lifted the cup and watched the napkins flutter away. “Shit,” he murmured, hopping up from the chair to grab them as they tumbled past someone walking by, barely missing their shoe. “Sorry,” he let out a laugh, righting himself. “Gotta watch that breeze.”

Arima’s hands are around a cold cup of coffee, his eyes narrowed slightly behind his glasses. He looks towards the street, his posture rigid and stern as he waits by the door of the little cafe. The coffee shop is mostly empty, even the person behind the register has gone to the back to take care of things: that just irritates Arima a little more -- he had been debating getting a pastry as well, and now that’s not possible.

Ah, probably would be tasteless and bland. Much like this coffee.

As the doorbell chimes and a man walks in, Arima looks at the figure and nods to his own coffee. “It’s cold,” he says, flatly. “And it took ten minutes for me to get it. If you know another place, I suggest going there instead.”
