MEET A YOUNG BLACK FEMINIST
JADE PERRY - writer x activist
Meet a Young Black Feminist was a 2016 summer feature hosted by YoungBlackFeminist.com. Every week, I spoke with one woman who shared her experiences as living as a Black feminist in today’s world. We discussed sexuality, young Black womanhood, creativity and more. It became a place to learn something new and find a place of support - by young Black women, for young Black women.
One day, I got an email, totally out of the blue. It was a woman, named Jade Perry, who shared how much she appreciated Young Black Feminist, and invited me to an interview. Interested, but not knowing who she was, I decided to read her work. And I’m so glad I did. Jade’s writing is simply, incredible. From body politics in the church, to navigating the multicultural waters in a college setting, Perry focuses on a wide array of topics, with stunning nuance and grace. I couldn’t wait to speak with her.
I’m so glad I got to talk with Jade, and I’m excited for you all to read our discussion. She focuses on several unique areas that are highly important for Black women, and offers warm, practical advice on how to handle them. Read our interview below on why girls should know their bodies, how Black women can challenge sexism in the church, and her advice for Black female college students.
