It was two AM when Leon came home, the sound of his boots hitting the hardwood floor as he walked through the living room. You heard him drop his duffle bag and keys down on the counter then throw off his coat. He sighed loudly, either from frustration or exhaustion, maybe even a combination of the two.
You laid on your back, staring up at the ceiling as you listened to him settle in. He’d been gone for the last month on a case, the type where you got maybe three phone calls and one or two text messages throughout his entire time away. It was lonely no matter how much you understood and accepted this life with him. You’d missed him desperately, your fingers curl into the sheets with a desperate desire to get up and go see him. Yet, you didn’t. You knew he liked this time to decompress and he thought you were asleep anyway. He was home safe. You could wait.
He padded down the hallway past the bedroom door slowly, trying to be quiet, as he made his way to the bathroom. He took a long shower. He always did that when got back from a long time away. He wanted to wash away the grime and the sins he accumulated on his missions.
When he finally made his way out of the bathroom he made his way to the bedroom door, pausing in front of it for a minute before he entered, and opened the door slowly. The creeking sound made you look over, making eye contact with him immediately. “You’re awake.” He doesn’t sound excited by this revelation or annoyed by it. Just a statement.
“Can’t sleep when you’re not here.” You say, lifting the covers up and motioning for him to come to bed. He obliges, quickly slipping in between the sheets and the comforter with you, arms sliding around your body to tug you into his chest tightly. He sighs with relief, burying his face into your hair. “I missed you.” You whisper, hand running through his damp locks.
“I missed you. I didn’t think I would be gone so long.” His voice is quiet and muffled from his position so you have to strain to hear him.
“It’s okay, Baby.” He doesn’t reply, simply squeezing you tighter for a moment. “Are you okay?”
“Just exhausted. Missed my home.”
“Nothing too serious happened I need to know about?” You don’t mean to pry but he has a habit of holding stuff in that he would benefit from talking about
“No, I promise.” His hand slips up your shirt to caress your back, gooseflesh prickling across your skin at the tough of his calloused hands.
You feel relief, glad that despite the longer than expected time frame, he was safe and everything was okay. “Good, good.” You kiss his forehead. “Get some rest, Leon.” His hand ceased its ministrations and he was snoring lightly within the minute.
———
Leon only slept peacefully for a couple hours, despite how tired he was. Even with you in his arms, his dreams plagued him.
It was always worse during and after a trip away. New scenes were added to his pandora’s box of memories his brain could replay, new enemies and new threats were added to the roster. He’d dream about plagues and sickness, not just himself being the victim but you. The amount of dreams he had where you were infected couldn’t be counted on both hands and toes, losing you to an illness because of him would be something he’d never get over.
The dream tonight was extra spicy, you were infected on purpose by someone that captured you. He was trying to find you, trying to save you but no matter where he went he couldn’t find you. He went through countless doors and ran down countless hallways of an abandoned hospital that looked like the one from his most recent mission only to hear your screams for help but not see you. When he finally found you, it was too late.
He was talking in his sleep, breathing heavily and starting to push you away in his sleep. You woke up immediately, knowing exactly what was happening. You smoothed his hair back, the strands damp with sweat. “Leon.” He doesn’t wake immediately, his hand turning from your grasp, his face scrunched as if in pain.”Leon, wake up.”
His eyes crack open and then shoot open as he sees you, arms wrapping back around you to bring you to his heaving chest. He holds you like this, trying to regain composure knowing that you were safe and his nightmares were only dreams. You wonder what he does when this happens and he’s away and you’re not there. You hate the idea that he’s alone and suffering. You try to not think about that.
“Leon, are you okay?” You finally ask, arms around him to keep him safe.
“I am now.”
You glance over at your phone to check the time. It was only a little past four AM. “Why don’t we try to get some more rest.”
He doesn’t reply, cuddling into you further as his only response.
You stay awake until you’re sure he’s back asleep, wanting to make sure he was comfortable before you decided to go back to sleep too. You couldn’t help but feel protective during moments like this. Leon was such a strong man. Not just physically but mentally, he was tough and smart. He could be a force to be reckoned with. Yet, here he was cuddled into you seeking comfort from a nightmare. You cherished the vulnerability in these moments from a man that doesn’t show that part of himself to anyone but you.
———
You wake up before Leon, somehow sliding from his grip without waking him to go to the kitchen. He must have been tired if you leaving the bed didn’t wake him. Hopefully he’d appreciate getting to sleep in and waking up to a home cooked breakfast.
You spent the next hour whipping up pancakes, sausage, eggs and fruit. You made fresh coffee and was in the middle of putting the plates together when Leon slowly made his way into the kitchen. “Good morning. It smells good.” He says as he approaches you, hair wild but looking rested. He leans down to kiss your temple, eyeing the food over your shoulder.
“I wanted to welcome you back home. I hope it’s good.”
He places his hands on your waist, giving you a firm squeeze. “Everything you do is good.”
You roll your eyes, picking the plates up and leaving his grip to take the plates to the bar. Leon stares into space for a moment before he follows you. You could tell he was trying to be normal but it always took time for him to feel comfortable again after he got back from a long time away. “Come eat before it gets cold.” His eyes slide to you and he moves to his seat. Sometimes he needed someone to direct him when his headspace wasn't the best.
The two of you eat in companionable silence, Leon devouring his plate of food a lot faster than you expected. Did he not get to eat much during his time away? Probably not.
“I hate how things feel when I get back. Everything feels so off.” He’s staring into space, cracking his knuckles in his lap as he speaks.
“What do you mean?”
“I have to readjust every time. You have to not only deal with my actual absence but then my mental absence when I come back. It just feels bad.” He sighs, hand moving from his lap to grip his hair in frustration. “I can’t just turn it off.”
“You don’t have to.” You stand up, looping your arms around him. His arms wrap around you immediately, always seeking your comfort. “Needing time to adjust to change is natural. Unfortunately, you’re human, Leon. You are allowed to feel emotions.”
He groans, head dropping. “It’s hard to explain what’s going on in my head.”
You kiss his cheek, squeezing him. “You don’t have to explain if you don’t want to.”
“I want you to know what I'm thinking even when it makes no sense.”
“It does make sense, though. You go off on these cases for weeks or months at a time. You’re in danger, barely eating or sleeping and you’re away from home. You come back and it can be a big change. It would be overwhelming to anyone. Leon.” You lean away from him, tilting your head to make eye contact with him.
He met your gaze, looking for any sign that you were judging him. He knew you weren’t but being vulnerable was hard, even with you. “I don’t deserve you.”
“Yes, you do. You deserve all the good things, Baby.”
He doesn’t reply, simply leaning in to give you a quick kiss before grabbing your plates and taking them to the sink. You sat back on the barstool watching him as he cleaned the dishes meticulously, slowly. “I feel you watching me.”
“Just observing you. I like that you’re back. It takes me some getting used to your presence again too.”
He glances over his shoulder, sending you a real smile for the first time today. “Gotta get back into the swing of doing chores.”
You smile back, happy to see that maybe telling you his thoughts took some weight off his shoulders. “I’m glad to have my help back. You know I hate dishes.”
“You cook and I wash. We’re both better at that.” He was right, Leon couldn’t cook to save his life.
“We make a good team.”
“I wouldn’t be able to make it without you here waiting for me. You know that, right? You do so much for me that I can never repay. Like last night-“
“Don’t worry about that.” You get up from your seat to walk up behind up, wrapping your arms around his waist, and pressing your head against his back. “I’m always here for you. Always.”
