On This Day In Royal History . 3 September 1660 . James, Duke of York (later King James II) married Anne Hyde. . . ◼ In 1660 James had prompted controversy by announcing his engagement to Anne Hyde, the daughter of King Charles II’s’ chief minister, Edward Hyde. . ◼ In 1659, while trying to seduce her, James promised he would marry Anne. Anne became pregnant in 1660, but following the Restoration & James’s return to power, no one at the royal court expected a prince to marry a commoner, no matter what he had pledged beforehand. . ◼ Although nearly everyone, including Anne’s father, urged the two not to marry, the couple married secretly, then went through an official marriage ceremony on 3 September 1660 in London. . ◼ Their first child, Charles, was born less than two months later, but died in infancy, as did five further sons & daughters. Only two daughters survived: Mary (born 30 April 1662) & Anne (born 6 February 1665), both future Queen’s. . ◼ Samuel Pepys wrote that James was fond of his children & his role as a father, & played with them “like an ordinary private father of a child”, a contrast to the distant parenting common to royals at the time. James’s wife was devoted to him & influenced many of his decisions. Equally important, was the river he explored that bears his name in modern day NY State. For much of the time before his death, around 1611, he worked for the Dutch, who founded their own American colony, New Netherland (1614), between New England in the north and Maryland and Virginia to the south. 1) Name change. Tale of two nonsailors 2nd September 1685, execution by beheading of Alice Lisle, the last woman in England to be judicially sentenced with beheading. Lisle was accused and convicted of harbouring fugitives after the defeat of the Monmouth Rebellion at the Battle of Sedgemoor. The members of the rebellion were tried during the ‘Bloody Assizes’ in Winchester, presided over by Baron George Jeffreys, known to history as the ‘hanging judge’. It is estimated that during the assizes Jeffreys gave the sentence of execution for treason, to 700 of those involved, or in Lisle’s case those who had sheltered the fugitives. Three years after the Monmouth Rebellion, during the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688, Jeffreys was captured trying to flee London, while disguised as a sailor. Ironically he was pointed out by one of his judicial victims, and captured. Terrified of the crowd, containing many who had received his judgment, Jeffrey’s pleaded to be protected from them. He died the following year in the Tower of London. 3rd September 1838, American social reformer, abolitionist, writer and orator Frederick Douglass escapes from slavery disguised as a sailor. Forced to work for "slave-breaker." Edward Covey, Douglass on this day escaped by boarding a northbound train of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, aided by Anna Murray, a free black woman from Baltimore, who Dougass had met the previous year and fallen in love with. Provided by Murray with money, papers and the sailors uniform, the couple upon Douglass successful escape marry and settle in New Bedford, Massachusetts, moving to Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1841.
