Dark Days in the West⎜Closed
Leo was awake before the sun's early rays hit the Earth below it. Blinking to clear his head of the fog that surrounded it, he looked over his shoulder at his wife, a smile appearing on his face as he gazed upon her sleeping form. Leaning over, he placed a gentle kiss to her forehead then carefully got out of bed, fearing waking her. He was quiet as he dressed and walked out into the living room to head over to Sarah's room. Checking in on his daughter caused his smile to widen. He preferred this time of the day when the Earth was quiet and those he cared for peaceful in their sleep. Of course enjoying a nice cup of coffee without disruption was nice too, but mostly it was the peace that could be found in the early morning that he liked so much.
He was on his second cup when he heard movement inside the house and he turned from his place on the porch to find his wife wrapping her shawl around her as she walked towards him. "I thought you would have slept longer?"
"I could say the same about you. Why are you up so early?"
Turning back to survey their land, he sighed softly before taking another sip of coffee. "Couldn't sleep and besides," he looked over his shoulder at her, "you look so beautiful when you're asleep, I couldn't risk waking you."
"Always the flatterer," Cathlene stated with a chuckle as she leaned into his side. As she saw the sun's light rise, she sighed. "Go on and check on the animals. I'll get Sarah up and by the time you get back, breakfast'll be on the table."

"Plowing the field need to be done. Soon if we can get to it. Winter's almost here." Leo looked over at his daughter, amusement written all over his face. "Feel up to helping?"
"Whatever you need me to do, Papa, I'll do it," Sarah answered with a smile on her face. She hopped up after getting excused from the table and rushed back to her room.
"Don't push her too hard."
"Now, when have I ever done a thing like that?" Leo stood then leaned over to kiss his wife. "Send Sarah outside when she's ready. I'll get the plow hitched up." It wasn't long after he left to get the plow ready that he heard someone running after him. "That didn't take you long at all."
"Why should I waste anymore daylight?" A smile appeared on her face before she shrugged. "What do you need me to do?"
"I'll get this outside the barn. Can you get Rosco and Merrit for me?"
"Sure thing." Stopping only to grab two halters, she ran over to the pasture and whistled for the two horses. Once they were in her reach, she clipped the halters on them and led them outside. As she was leading back to her father, she noticed two people on horseback heading towards their farm. "Papa, someone's coming. Do you know them?"
Leo looked up from the plow, his face darkening slightly when he realized it was two men heading towards them. "Hook them horses up to the fence and get on inside, Sarah." When she hesitated, he looked over at her. "Now!" He walked slowly over to the barn and pulled out his rifle, his eyes watching as he made sure his daughter got inside safely before turning his attention to the two men. "What can I help you with, gentlemen?" he called out when they came to a stop.
