I'm reading Babyville by Jane Green. I thought it would be interesting to read since I'm also expecting, and it's definitely got some relatable bits. I like how the relationships are treated respectfully and, while there is drama, it's at an appropriate level. When a character leaves one relationship for another, it's treated like they're just more compatible with the other, rather than there being any intrinsic fault with the initial partner. I loved seeing the women go through the life changes that they needed to be happy and to really be themselves. I also like how the writing style switches between sections. Two sections have rotating point-of-view, and one is first-person, and they're all quite well-done. It shows the scope of Green's ability to get in her characters' heads. I like that it's shown twice how being with the wrong man for you can really dim a woman's shine, and that loss of libido doesn't necessarily point to anything wrong with her own hormones so much as just general dissatisfaction in her relationship. Out of all the characters, I definitely relate to Maeve the most. I felt the same way she did when she found out she was pregnant, including the stunned, kind of out-of-body "let's wait and see what happens" experience. I think it goes better for her than for me, though (and I'm happy for her!) I know Mark is supposed to be a nice person, but there are parts where I really disagree with that assessment. He comes off a bit judgmental and entitled from where I sit, but then, I tend to be quite cynical about men. I think he's written realistically as a man, I just don't like him very much. Jack is a gem, though. I'm currently in the middle of Sam's section. There are a few things that have made me go "oh, yikes" because they're kind of showing me what to expect once I have my baby... I'm not really looking forward to those bits in real life, but I'm glad they're written down in a forthright way in an easily-digestible novel. I like her-- I like all three of the main women (and Bella)-- and I hope her life gets better like the other two. Generally I really enjoyed this book #babyville #janegreen https://www.instagram.com/p/CBQsn0jJ_IP/?igshid=1g027nmecvmoi
Happy Thursday! I’ve been spending the entire week by the pool and completely ignoring all my responsibilities. It feels so good to mostly unplug although my laundry mountain is getting a bit ridiculous 😳 . ⛱ . Thank you to @berkleypub for sending me a copy of THE FRIENDS WE KEEP by Jane Green. I am loving all these summer releases. It makes me want to go to the beach ASAP! . ⛱ . Book blurb: . Evvie, Maggie, and Topher have known each other since university. Their friendship was something they swore would last forever. Now years have passed, the friends have drifted apart, and none of them ever found the lives they wanted – the lives they dreamed of when they were young and everything seemed possible. Evvie starved herself to become a supermodel but derailed her career by sleeping with a married man. Maggie married Ben, the boy she fell in love with at university, never imagining the heartbreak his drinking would cause. Topher became a successful actor but the shame of a childhood secret shut him off from real intimacy. By their thirtieth reunion, these old friends have lost touch with each other and with the people they dreamed of becoming. Together again, they have a second chance at happiness… until a dark secret is revealed that changes everything. . ⛱ . #prhpartner #thefriendswekeep #janegreen #summerreads #chicklit #jennblogsbooks #bookstagramming #bookgram #mybookfeatures #libraryofinstagram #bookfeatures #bookphotography #bookpage #booksofinstagram #bookaesthetic #booktography #bookcommunity #goodreads #bookriot #readinglife #instareads #bookshivers #instabook #booksofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BzPC1ngld6-/?igshid=l23842odum8j
