This is a song I wrote in 2006 in the midst of what I dislike to call my "starving artist in San Francisco" period. It's one of my favorite poems I've ever written and most definitely what I hope to constantly achieve and surpass on future Jason Nevermind projects. The lyrics go like this:
Up in the morning again, trying to win again, trying not to sin again or rather trying not to sin against, those who own my residence or the majority of my automobile, I feel, that's just the world making me a fool again, I wanna call in sick like my man The Whooligan, but my need to submit to their greed is the stone in the corner of this life that I lead.
That's just your way, now ain't it baby, I ask for opportunity but you say maybe, I'll do a good job sir your man ain't lazy, just throw me some cash so I don't go crazy. X2
That's just life doing its thing again, a revolving door with a definite end, life after life friend after friend, we all end, better have some money to spend. X2
When you're lost, you can look and you will find me, in the drivers seat with the map upside down, we may seem aimless, but cheer up sad clown, we can ask for directions in the next town, and odds are people that have lived there their whole lives, that work long hours and strive to survive have no idea of the place we've contrived, even though it exists, in between, betwixt.
It exists, in between, betwixt X3
We'll never find it going on like this.
It exists, betwixt, between X3
and when we find it it will be nothing, like it seemed.
That's just life doing it's thing again, no matter how I try seems I'm going to sin again, it's hard, to confide in a friend when you know you're going to meet the same fate in the end X2
That's just the world making me a fool again, the stress makes me want to act like a hooligan, but I don't pull guns, and I don't pull cards, and I don't peel caps, when life gets hard, I don't punch girls but I do punch a clock and consider myself the laughing stock of commerce and sell-ery, those vampires had better be, ready to replace me with their next long meal.
It's not En Vogue to give something to feel, and if I May-field the answer to the question that's real, why would we want to rob and steal, it's the Franklin's that cover the soul with appeal, it's not En Vogue to give something to feel, and if I Mayfield the answer to the question that's real, what makes us want to rob and steal, it's the Franklin's that cause the heart to congeal...
And if that made any sense to you at all, what the hell are you doing in my head... and did you get enough... Out.
My favorite artists always pay tribute within their work and I strive to do the same.
"I wanna call in sick like my man The Whooligan" is a shout out to Bay Area producer / DJ / former Amoeba Music coworker Julio Galvez who always called in sick to work the day after a gig, big up!
The "stone in the corner..." line is a reference to Bob Marley and the Wailers:
"It's just your way, now ain't it baby," is a reference to one of my favorite songs by 60s soul singer Jan Bradley:
"If you're lost you can look and you will find me" is a quote from Cyndi Lauper:
"It's hard to confide in a friend when you know you're going to meet the same fate in the end" is a reference to my best friend and mentor Anthony "Big Ant" Marin, rest in power.
"I don't punch girls but I do punch a clock" is a rewriting of a lyric from the Blacksheep song "The Choice Is Yours."
"It's not En Vogue to give something to feel, and if I Mayfield the answer to the question that's real..." is a message and a reference. En Vogue had a hit with a cover version of Aretha Franklin's song "Giving Him Something He Can Feel," written by Curtis Mayfield for the movie Sparkle.
Finally, "Franklin's" is a reference to currency. Benjamin Franklin was a freak. The only person pictured on U.S. currency who was never President. The "founding fathers" called our country an "experiment." Many of them "experimented" with women of color fathering many illegitimate children. No wonder the only kid of color in the Peanuts comic strip...
(notice he's the only one on the left side of the table)
...as well as the only puppet of color from the original run of Sesame Street...
...were both named Franklin.
The U.S. was never meant for US, it was meant for the elite.
