The Shallows is a tense, squirm in your seat with all the frightening, anticipation a creature stalker movie one can handle. After an intense POV opening sequence lets you know something terrifying awaits, we are introduced to our surfer girl, played swimmingly (sorry) by Blake Lively. Her character is instantly likable, she's charming and inviting... yet almost immediately you get the sense she's not some just babe in a bikini. She has come here with purpose. She's a woman who will not be deterred or intimidated, by exotic locations, hard waves, strange men or even a killer shark. I loved her in this. We quickly arrive at the beach and Shallows hits you with these wide, beautifully expansive shots of the incredible location, you totally feel like you are watching something on the Travel Channel... white sandy beach, perfect water, rolling waves... all the beauty of this hidden surfer's paradise almost makes you forget what's lurking just off shore... Almost. Lively quickly takes to the water, effortlessly plunging into and under the crashing waves on her board with a smooth, sensual grace, that again helps to take filmgoers minds off the inevitable. The camera effortless glides along with her every move, helping lull you into a false sense of security. Director Jaume Collet-Serra really does a good job making you feel safe amidst the tranquility of the water and beauty of the perfect beach, but slowly the shots move from wide expansive ones to closer, tighter shots... until we end up right in the water, bobbing around with Lively. Before you realize it, your feeling of safety and distance is replaced by a close up, uneasy tension and straight up nail biting, sparked by the unknown and the unseen. Cue the shark... our shark, ready to swalla' ya whole. Yes, Shallows has its over the top moments, but so does #jaws & #deepbluesea ...without those sort of moments what's the sense of making a shark attack movie!
