Newsies headcanons 🫶🏻

(Modern AU)

- Jack has a really cool tree house that everybody hangs out in. It's fully decorated, and people just go inside it even if Jack's not there.

- Davey and Race are on the debate team and are menaces to society. During unprotected time, Davey gives the ideas, and Race shouts them aggressively.

- Race loves literally anything sweet and has the biggest sweet tooth to ever live. For his birthday, people just buy him stacks of sweets and chocolate, or if he's mad, they just give him a moam and call it a day.

- Sarah and David shared a room and had bunkbeds. They had to be physically pried away from each other when their parents decided they needed their own space.

- skittery has tons of posters on his wall that constantly fall off in the middle of the night and scare him shitless, he refuses to take them down.

- Once, Race and spots parents had to be called into the school to bring spare clothes for them because of a mishap with the food tech ingredients (they had a full blown food war)

- Jack and Davey had a similar experience in art class with the paint

- Race and Skittery are ALWAYS in the cinema they have seen every movie ever and love consuming media

- English is Races mother's second language, she called him "bunny" for years, thinking she was calling him "baby." Races friends take the piss and call him bunny all the time, meaning he has an abnormal amount of bunny merch

-One day, Race was walking by a forest and saw that a fox was chasing after a baby bunny. Because of his mother, he felt connected to it, he literally fist fought the fox and kept the bunny. He called her bubbles

- Race loves adrenaline, so therefore loves roller coaster, spot acts all tough like he's not scares of them but is secretly terrified.

- Jack and Davey go to the library for study dates, but Jack just talks and pokes at Davey until they go get lunch after

- at the function, Blink, Race and Skittery are ALWAYS the drunkest

- davey and Mush volunteer at the foodbank every Christmas even though Davey doesn't celebrate it

- Spots dad has confiscated his slingshot over 50 times and has no clue where he gets them from.

- They have group sleepovers and play roblox all night often.

- Medda is their drama teacher and has a love-hate relationship with her job.

-crutchy makes little embroidery patches for his friends

- Mush has an army of plushies that he refuses to get rid of because "what if they have feelings"

- once, Race went as spot for halloween and laughed so hard he cried

- Mush is tiktok famous and posts shirtless thirst traps

Jack and Spot are exes. When David learn that, he goes to talk to Spot so he can ask him how is Jack as a boyfriend and learn why did they broke up and basically all the pros and the cons of Jack ad a boyfriend.

Spot talks good about Jack because they are in good terms. He tells ton of stories about Jack to David and David starts going to Brooklyn more often to talk with Spot. They also become friends and David goes to him everytime he needs to talk about Jack to someone who will understand him.

ohhhh boy i have so many of these for you

buckle up everyone and get read for the javid experience of a lifetime cause this is my second favorite ship and i’m on a roll rn

seriously guys it took 10 years for them to get together

alright let’s go back a bit

they met in 7th grade when davey and his twin sister sarah moved to the same school as jack and the rest of the gang

jack is a bit of a class clown, loud and manic but charming and charismatic enough to keep himself out of detention most of the time

davey is a bit more stiff and a lot more socially anxious, so jack’s overbearing demeanor keeps him from approaching the first few days

but jack plops himself down at his table in science on the third day of school, introducing himself with a wide grin that faulters slightly at davey’s deer-in-headlights expression

davey just turns back to his work, trying to avoid the interaction all together, but jack’s persistent and not one to take being ignored

eventually davey gets fed up and looks up to snap “oh for the love of- will you shuT UP?!”

and they’ve been inseparable ever since

now they’re 23 year olds in college, and davey’s stressed out law student ass has just burst into their shared apartment ranting about the fact that professor snyder gave him a “fucking 92??? there’s absolutely no way i got less than a 95 on that paper, let alone with morris delancey getting a goddamn 98! i’m convinced he’s mentally deficient, jackie, i’m telling you”

davey’s rant gets more passionate as he speaks, gesturing wildly with his hands, the to-go coffee cup in his hands dangerously close to spilling everywhere with every word

jack just calmly sets his paintbrush in his water cup, walks over to davey’s fuming form, and sets the cup on the counter before davey can manage to make a mess neither of them want to clean up

davey keeps ranting as jack takes the messenger bag off his shoulder and plops it into a chair in the dining room

and continues when jack comes to stand in from of him again, trying and failing over and over to get a word in edgewise

eventually, jack just sighs and “oh for the love of- will you shuT UP?!” before grabbing davey’s face and pulling his lips down to meet his own

call it poetic irony, call it whatever you want tbh, cause for the first time davey doesn’t give a shit what you call it as long as jack doesn’t stop kissing him

his brain takes a second to register what the hell is happening, but once everything clicks he kisses jack with as much emotion as he was putting into his rant a few seconds ago

they’re forced to pull back for air eventually, jack chasing davey’s lips as their foreheads come to rest together, and davey’s chuckle comes out giddy and breathless

they open their eyes slowly, still drinking in the fact that they ACTUALLY finally kissed eachother and stopped dancing around their feelings

“looks like i finally found a way to get you to shut up”

“oh zip it kelly, you’re worse than i am sometimes”

“hey, just cause i’m in love with you doesn’t mean you get to talk to me like that-“

all the air seems to leave the room as jack freezes, his face still mere inches from davey’s

“jackie?”

“yeah, dave?”

“i love you too, you big idiot”

and if they stand there in the middle of their apartment kissing for a while longer, then nobodies around to see it anyway

Newsies Pride Month

Day one: coming out

the list of prompts

this is the first prompt of the month, so of course I’m already three days behind. And boy, is it a doozy.

So Davey has known all his life that he was gay

And all his life, he’d been the only one to know that he was gay

But then all of a sudden, he’s got FRIENDS! MULTIPLE friends!

And they’re all like this: “criminalized? Never heard of her.”

Constant jokes, implications, think “that’s what she said” but it’s “that’s what he said” and also it’s 1899

And at the lodge in the evenings, when they’re left unsupervised,

Flagrant displays of homosexuality here.

Blink and Mush are all over each other, always.

Albert and Race shooting innuendos at each other.

Romeo throwing bad pickup line after worse pickup line at Specs and getting playfully “rejected”

Sniper is constantly positioned in Smalls’ lap, making it difficult to play poker

Not everyone is queer (c’mon guys I gotta be realistic here),

But if someone wanted to rat they would have done it already

And yet Davey is still hesitant to come out to them

He’s nervous. Scared. About to do something that will greatly increase the likelihood that he will get sent to prison.

The way he’s always done it was safe. But it was also lonely. And he was done with lonely.

He’d known the newsies for over a month before he made up his mind to tell someone.

He really wanted to tell Jack. But Jack was also the one he was most terrified to tell.

Jack was the leader, so he could hypothetically kick someone out. And he was also his first best friend.

Jack was also one of the straight ones, Davey knew that much from Jack’s little fling with Katherine, short though it was.

Who knows how Jack might react?

There was also the little problem that Davey was absolutely head-over-heels in love with Jack.

So no, he couldn’t tell Jack

But he was also really close with Crutchie

And Crutchie was really close with Mush

So Davey has a clue as to what Crutchie’s reaction might be

And now to wait for the perfect moment.

If you’ve ever tried to wait for the perfect moment to tell someone something very important, you’ll know that they really come, if ever.

But Davey was one of the lucky ones. He only had to wait for a couple of weeks.

The entire time, it had felt like he was about to sneeze. The words were on the tip of his tongue, eager to jump out at any moment.

Crutchie had gone up to the roof early. The game had gotten loud quickly and the night had stayed muggy.

And, like people often are when they have a very important thing to say and finally the right moment, he wasted the entire thing frozen to the spot in anxiety.

The sky was starting to get dark, and Les and Davey had to get home

Davey felt a sinking feeling of disappointment as he wondered how long he’d have to wait for his next chance.

And then something inside him, something old and lonely and hungry for a companion who actually knew him, who he didn’t have to watch every sentence around, snapped.

And he said to himself, “fuck it.”

He told Les to wait there and that this would only take a minute, and then he started up the ladder

On the roof, Crutchie was lying on his back, staring at the stars.

When he heard Davey approaching, he sat up and turned to look at Davey with an inviting smile.

“Hiya Dave!”

He soon noticed the look on Davey’s face and asked “what’s eating ya?”

Cue Davey’s explanation, if it can be called that.

It was mostly just a lot of mumbling and an increasingly confused Crutchie

But he managed to make out the words “I’m” and “queer”, and everything clicked together

He gave an amused little laugh. “Yeah, I knew.” he said

Davey was stunned.

“H...how??”

Crutchie laughed again. “Yer not that subtle, Dave.”

“...oh.” Davey finally stuttered. “Does… does Jack… also know?”

“Na, he’s the only one who don’t.”

“Oh, phew”

“Hm?”

“Well, Jack is straight.”

Crutchie just laughed at that.

“But, but.. he is, …right?”

“Where’dcha get that idea?”

“But… he was with Katherine.”

“Yeah, so?”

“So he likes girls.”

“People can swing both ways.”

“...oH.”

Crutchie just laughed. “For the smart guy, yer real clueless sometimes, Dave.”

There was a brief pause as Davey worked up the nerve to ask another question.

“Does… does Jack have… anyone specific in-“

“Davey!!!” The sound of Les’s voice rang out from the fire escape.

“Davey!! We’re gonna be late for dinner!”

Davey jumped. “Coming!” he called down and scurried down the ladder

Crutchie stared at the ladder as he heard Davey and Les clamber down to the street, shaking his head fondly. “Utterly clueless sometimes,” he whispered.

I think this is the longest headcanon I’ve ever written.

sorry these took so long but i hope you like them! also,,,angsty javid? more like the only thing I live for tbh

so we’re gonna talk about what happens after the strike

it seemed fine for a while

after the strike, business went back to normal, as much as it could after all the attention they had gathered, but for the most part it was no different than how they all used to work

and jack was probably taking it harder than anyone else

the whole city called him a hero, his own boys in particular, but the only thing he saw when he shut his eyes was the fists swinging and the screams and blood flowing, and the absolute horror of that first day

the fact that davey started staying at the lodging house a few nights a week was totally unrelated

but in all honesty, davey was really worried about jack

he would wake up, sell his papes, and retreat back up to the rooftop

no thing more, nothing less

he lost that spark that made davey even want to join him in the first place

and davey starts to get worried

really worried

jack stopped going to visit medda’s theater, he stopped playing card games with the guys, and he spent about every free minute with a pencil and paper in his hand

he never let anyone see his drawings, but davey wasn’t even sure he wanted to

one night he was staying at the house, sharing the rooftop with crutchie and jack

crutchie was still kinda getting back on his feet after his recent return from the refuge, so he had gone to sleep a little early

jack sat next to davey on the edge of the roof was davey pretended to read a book while jack drew

he kept glancing over, watching as he added a complete landscape of the gates to the world slowly but surely

that is, until he started drawing figures

his hand picked up the pace and the next time david glanced over, there was a full scene of a handful of newsies, some hurt, some screaming, some crying, and he didn’t even know what to say

but jack just kept going

there was nearly a dozen newsies by the time jack finally stopped

as soon as he finished, his hand flipped to cover the very middle of the page as if once he drew it, he couldn’t stand to look at it

and davey couldn’t stay silent any longer

“jack, you have got to stop doing this to yourself”

and that’s his breaking point

he hasn’t cried since it happened but all of a sudden he jut couldn’t hold it in anymore

so davey just lets him get it out and he’s just so scared because he just lost his rock and his best friend and everyone’s expecting him to know what to do

but he has no idea what he’s doing and all these kids’ lives and safety and well-being rely on him being able to take care of them but he can’t even keep his best friend safe

and jack’s hyperventilating and sobbing and a few days of bottling everything up just spills out

but it’s okay because davey is there to take some of that weight off his shoulders and together they’ll figure everything out eventually

Javid headcanons:

-for extra money they babysit together, they're like Sam and cat. Jack keeps the kids entertained so they ask their parents for them to come over again and Davey makes sure nobody gets hurt

- Davey bought Jack a banjo because he saw it in a santa fe poster, Jack can NOT grasp it for the life in him 😭

- Davey can play the violin and he performs every so often and Jack goes and stares at him from the back bc he can't afford a ticket

- Daveys hosts parties bc he's the only one with a house and Jack is literally the police when it comes to stopping people from disrespecting the house

- Jack can fall asleep anywhere but davey has to be in certain conditions, so whenever they stay anywhere Jack sleeps on the floor for half an hour whilst waiting for Davey to prep the room

- Jack once wore overalls bc he thought he would look western and Davey laughed at him so hard that he cried.

- Davey HATES being picked up or carried because it makes him panic. Jack's takes advantage of this all the time and will throw adavey over his shoulder whenever Daveys being stubborn

- They get really corny and dance in the rain, literally every single time

- Jack realised that Davey has a fake laugh infont of their other friends, he finds out that Daveys really insecure about the way he laughs. So Jack always tickles him/ does things to make him laugh to show him that nobody judges him

- they tried to make pancakes and Jack flipped it so high that it got stuck on the ceiling
