Haunting the narrative on a Pilar Bardem level: she was a woman who, during the dictatorship years, as both an actress and a woman, fought for women’s rights and artistic freedom. She got into trouble with the dictatorship and faced political sanctions because of it, and she never shut up. She always spoke exactly how she fucking wanted to speak. And this woman raised her children with those same ideas: never shut the fuck up, and keep fighting for what you believe is right, even if there’s an entire regime behind you trying to silence you. She was one of the first openly pro-Palestinian activists in Spain back in the 1980s. She was always extremely vocal about human rights, social rights, and women’s rights.

And today, this woman speaks through her son, Javier Bardem, a man who basically went, “Well, I already won an Oscar, right? So now I’m gonna say whatever the fuck I want.” And every single time someone puts a microphone in front of him, he starts condemning political and military abuses happening right now, openly calls the State of Israel genocidal, goes around saying that all these global economic and military superpowers are basically just measuring their dicks, and that it’s pure toxic masculinity.

And every time I see him, the only thing I think is: this man, who was absolutely devastated when his mother died (because she genuinely was the love of his life, literally; before Penélope, he went everywhere with his mother, and after Penélope, he went everywhere with Penélope and his mother, like the ultimate mama’s boy) this man lives entirely to make sure his mother, wherever she is, would be insanely proud of him. And honestly, this is “haunting the narrative” on the level of your son becomes a global superstar and, solely because he wants you to be proud of him even from six feet under, he couldn’t give less of a fuck about damaging his career or closing doors for himself as long as he keeps carrying on your legacy. Like… peak. Absolute peak.

Honestly, if I ever have a son and he doesn’t turn out like Javier Bardem, then what was even the point of giving birth to a man? I’m asking seriously. If you’re gonna raise a son, do what Pilar Bardem did and make sure he turns into someone like Javier Bardem. Otherwise, it’s not worth it. That’s the conclusion I’ve reached today.
