***A special, off-schedule post in honor of it being Jax Appreciation Weekend!
Character: Jefferson “Jax” Jackson
From: Flash (2 episodes), Legends of Tomorrow
Representation: Racial, Chronic pain
Their Importance: Jax is an incredibly amazing character, and one I admire very much. One thing I greatly enjoy about his character and have written about before is that he avoids negative and racist stereotypes - he has multiple tattoos and hasn’t gone to college, but this is not presented as negative. The only time someone negatively reacts to Jax’s lack of college schooling is when Caitlin Snow claims that he “quit” college and was unworthy of being a hero, but she later apologizes, and in my opinion, Jax more than shows how much of a hero he is in every episode afterwards. Jax is brave, loyal, and shown to be one of the sweetest, kindest members of his team - not to mention one of the smartest (he’s shown to figure out how to fix a time ship from an owner’s manual, which is beyond amazing to me).
Jax also canonically has chronic pain. He was affected by the particle accelerator in The Flash, when he was hit by dark matter and slammed into a wall, thus severely impacting his ACL. He lost his football scholarship due to it, and in Legends, it was shown that he cannot run very far on his leg. When Jax did run on a mission, he just barely made it due to his leg cramping up from the pain.
The show makes it clear that he’s not only capable as a superhero with powers, but without powers as well. He’s amazing as Firestorm, but also works on the ship as chief mechanic. As the younger half of Firestorm, when his other half dies, he will eventually be without powers, but has shown that he can manage fine on his own. He’s been left alone against enemies without powers, and still manages to get the upper hand on them by using his knowledge and skill. To me, seeing a character of color who also manages with pain is amazing to see, especially one who’s so positive and heroic.
Issues: While Jax canonically mentions having chronic pain, it isn’t acknowledged often. Flash only mentions it once (granted, he wasn’t on Flash often, so perhaps that gets a pass), and Legends, the show he stars in, only mentions it once as well, and seemingly only for the plot. I don’t recall him running long distances too often in the show, but considering he’s constantly on missions (that go wrong), I can imagine that he must have to run a lot, and his leg would affect him negatively. It’s something I hope gets explored on the show more often, as it would be amazing to see a character on TV deal with chronic pain while continuing to be a hero.
With many thanks to @starklinqs for the write up!
