L'Atalante was released in France on 12 September 1934.

In the early 1930s, films and music about "barge dwellers" were popular in France and in the summer of 1993 producer Jacques-Louis Nounez showed director Jean Vigo a treatment about "barge dwellers" written by Jean Guinée. Vigo initially rejected the idea, but then began working on a script and assembled a crew he had experience with, including cinematographer Boris Kaufman, art director Francis Jourdain, and composer Maurice Jaubert. He also cast Jean Dasté, who had worked with on the short film Zéro de conduite (1933).

Filming was scheduled to begin in the summer of 1933, but did not start until November. Vigo (who was already suffering from tuberculosis) became ill during much of the shoot, due to the cold and wet conditions, and struggled to finish the film. Editor Louis Chavance completed the final cut while Vigo was bedridden. Vigo died at age 29 on 5 October, less than one month after the film's release.

L'Atalante was a commercial and critical failure when it was first released and was almost completely forgotten by the end of the decade. After a re-release in 1947, the film began to be reassessed and championed by both US critics and directors of the French New Wave.

As early as 1962 L'Atalante began being mentioned as one of the greatest films of all time (it has appeared as high as #5 on the Sight & Sound poll, and was ranked #34 in the 2022 critics poll).
