James Sirius Potter was a heartbreaker, through and through.
And in the seventeen years he'd been alive, he'd managed to pick up anyone he'd fucking pleased.
Until now.
Because yes, James Sirius Potter was a heartbreaker, through and through, but so was Teddy Lupin.
Teddy Lupin was the type of boy that looked like you could bring home to your parents. He could look however he liked, really. He was sweet and charming and would pull you into a broom closet and have his way with you and left everyone and anyone swooning to the floor wherever he went.
It frustrated James.
It wasn't supposed to be so hard.
Why the fuck was it so hard?
Of course, he knew why it was so hard.
James wanted Teddy to be more than a notch on his bedpost.
James wanted to hold his hand in public and kiss his cheek and wear his sweaters and pay for his dinner and put his arm around him when they sat together.
That's why it was so hard.
James was a terrible liar. It was only so long until him playing it cool became very uncool.
So now he was stuck in Grimmauld Place, trying to avoid the fact that Teddy and Andromeda was in the same house as him, and would be until Boxing Day.
The fact that Teddy and him were sharing a room.
Teddy liked to sleep shirtless.
To James's chagrin. And delight. It was still a fine line between the two. He'd cross that bridge when he came to it.
He didn't quite know how it came to this situation. How it came to him trailing after Teddy fucking Lupin like a lost puppy, him of all people. He did not do lost puppy. And in the short stint that Teddy and Victoire Weasley had been an item, he'd almost avada'd himself, watching them doing all the things James had wanted to do.
It was a fucking travesty.
A tragedy.
It was fucked up.
And of course.
The mistletoe.
George Weasley had thought it funny to put some charmed mistletoe in Grimmauld.
If you were related by blood, a warm hug was all that was needed to break the charm.
Platonic friendships, a kiss on the cheek would do.
Unrequited feelings and relationships required mouth to mouth contact.
James had tried his best, to be careful. He'd had to hug his dad and peck Scorpius, to the distaste of Albus. It was almost worth it.
And then.
And then.
Christmas eve, in a fit of irresponsibility, trying to beat Lily to the best seat at the table-
Teddy had been walking through the doorway as James tried shoving past him with a "Teddy, bugger off."
He was yanked back under the doorway in the most unpleasant fashion, landing on his ass.
It was charming. Not really.
"Pucker up, Jamie." Teddy said smarmily, offering his cheek. It was flushed, for some reason.
James felt his heartbeat speed up. Because it wasn't gonna work, and Teddy would know.
James feigned disgust, avoiding the incoming misery, saying, "don't be so excited, Teddy."
The blush turned darker. James ignored it.
He leaned forward, his breath hitching as his lips brushed against Teddy's cheek, a little closer to the corner of the mouth than it needed to be. His skin was smooth, clean shaven and just nice.
It pissed James off. It was something he couldn't have.
"That should do it." James murmured, the alarms blaring in his head. 'LIAR. LIAR. LIAR.'
Teddy made a funny sort of face, gesturing for James to move ahead.
He took three steps forward, just to be pulled back. His throat closed up, knowing what was coming.
"Fuck." Teddy breathed, and James's heart dropped to his feet. Then.
"That's not how I wanted you to find out." Teddy said sadly. The funny face, there again, a sad quirk of his lips, resigned.
"Find out..?" James didn't allow himself to hope. It couldn't be. Teddy was playing a dirty joke. He'd gone and ruined everything.
Teddy gnawed at his lip angrily, angry with himself or James, he didn't know. "I fancy you."
Ah.
Unexpected, surprising. But welcome. Very welcome.
"You're taking the mickey." James stated, searching Teddy's face for any signs of his lie. His hair had gone black. He was upset. Teddy shook his head slightly.
James could cry. He could leap into the air and sing.
He didn't. Instead, he leaned in for the second time that night.
And finally, after what had been too long, everything slotted into place.
They shared a bed that night.
