YAP SEGMENT ABOUT THE SMITHS
for my au, i would like to use the smith family in ts2 as a metaphor for idealised american culture and assimilation.
the characters (especially in the sims 2) serve as parodies, which makes it clear that the sims 1 and sims 2 were made as critiques of american culture and capitalism. the smith family, in my opinion, fits into this category, and the aliens in sims 2 are symbolic of actual immigrants.
because aliens are a fictional species and the ts2 aliens engage in breeding practices and are unquestionably not human, unlike real-life immigrants, this could be a somewhat problematic read and orientalist in nature. however, i am considering the historical context that the fear of the "other" is closely linked to the portrayal of aliens in literature, television, and movies. during the space age in the 20th century, aliens started to gain popularity as the american government promoted fear of russians, communists, and 'foreigners' at a time when minorities were becoming more visible in america. therefore, aliens were employed as a literary device to symbolise both the fear of the unknown in space and the fear of the cultural other, i.e., the immigrant or foreigner. after all, another definition of "alien" is "foreigner".
pt9 represents immigrants who integrate into american society but are never respected, valued, or considered "true americans". he is from a different planet and acts in a "weird" way. his speech is written entirely in capital letters, with ellipses between each word. he speaks deliberately and slowly, just like someone who has never spoken english before would (as seen in ts2 psp). he encounters prejudice everywhere he goes. also in the psp game, he and his family are being held captive in a small, claustrophobic shelter after being detained for being aliens, "for their own safety". although this discrimination is less obvious in the pc game, buzz still harasses him because he is an alien, as stated in the advertisements for the pc game.
he still makes an effort to blend in with the idealised american lifestyle, despite his cultural othering. he changed his last name to smith, and his house is the best in all of strangetown, with a lovely pool and a lot of greenery surrounding it. his two-storey house is the stereotypical suburban home. his wife and two children (one girl and one boy) make up the ideal nuclear family.
all of his behaviour further creates the impression that he is an immigrant man attempting to blend in, and this is also the case with his child, johnny smith.
in one of his psp secrets, it is stated clearly that johnny smith was bullied: "johnny knows that green skin is just like red hair... a great reason to bully a smaller kid." - like his father, he attempts to make up for it by projecting the ideal of an american man. he has a girlfriend, a sports car, and seven body points (meaning he is athletic). however, he still encounters discrimination in spite of his best efforts, just like his father. tank grunt, who presumably learnt to hate aliens from his father, is the person who targets johnny with the most discrimination - this is evidenced by tank interrupting johnny's birthday party and getting into a fight with him.
moreover, this and johnny's upbringing where he was sheltered tremendously and is stunted as a result (i.e unable to do basic household chores, gets his parents to drive him everywhere, constantly makes them do his responsibilities, etc) - makes him an actually deeply insecure person. and, in my lesbian johnny headcanon, is the reason why he and ophelia fall out in the end, because ophelia craves someone who will love and protect her openly and loudly, someone who isn't afraid to be themselves genuinely and is able to take care of her. in the end, they're incredibly incompatible and they realise this once they hit college.
YAP OVER.. HEADCANONS BELOW ↓
All of the Curious family are afro-latine (on Glarn’s side) & Indigenous on Kitty’s side. They are apart of the Te-Moak Shoshone (Elko band) tribe, a tribe close to where Area 51 resides (aka where Strangetown is, in this fictionalised version)
Jenevieve "Jenny" Smith (neé Curious): 40. Intersex (Congenital Andrenal Hyperplasia) Transgender Woman. Bisexual. AuDHD, Depression. PhD in midwifery & pediatric nursing. Works as a midwife and pediatric nurse. Following her want to quit her job in game, I like to think that she starts her own free-lance doula career after the fact. Was hopelessly in love with Lyla prior to her passing, they had a sweet puppy love situationship type thing where neither of them fully understood their feelings for eachother but knew only that they were profound.
Pollination #9 Smith: 64??? (Aliens age significantly differently to sim-humans, with his space travels and earth gravity affecting his appearance). No real definitive sexuality as Sixam romance works a great deal different than human romance. Retired Pollination Technician. He has a great deal of guilt regarding his past families and especially Chloe & Lola. Being faced with the consequences of the callous act of pollination forced him to rethink his former lives and now he tries to make it up to the two girls, financially supporting them where he can and getting them out of trouble - but Lola and Chloe are rightfully skeptical. After Lola and Chloe were revealed to Jenny, their relationship fell apart but they have too much history and affection for eachother to seperate, but it's on very thin ice.
Johannes "Johnny" Smith: 17 (turning 18). Cisgender girl, masculine lesbian. Very much was a tomboy as a child but realising she was a lesbian made things significantly more difficult for her as she already had a lot of identity issues with her alien side. Very very insecure and very sheltered, but tries to make up for this by acting 'cool'. Her definition of cool is the average MTV teenage boy on TV. Resents her father for making her half alien in the first place and bringing along the baggage that comes with it; tries to seperate herself from her alienness completely.
Jill Smith: 12 turning 13. Cisgender girl, bisexual. I don't have a lot of headcanons for her because I don't play with The Smiths a lot, but she's wickedly intelligent, a lot more secure in her half alien identity than Johnny, and Jenny has a lot more patience to teach her how to cook, clean, and other basic household tasks. Tumblr hipster blogger and fandom girlie iktr.

The Family Ever
Oh no, Lazlo botched the dinner
It happens even to the best 😅
Jenny stayed to eat the burnt salmon 😅
And suddenly, Lazlo fell ill 😧
I think my mod folder hates me, why does it only target the Sims that I actually like 😅
Vidcund did take Jenny's advice to heart. He'd love to meet someone new, but the dating pool in Strangetown is basically non-existent.
He tried his luck online, but no one interesting showed up.
I had some hopes with Nina Caliente but they have negative chemistry lol
So he found refuge with his other love, space.
Meanwhile, evil mastermind Loki Beaker is stealing our newspaper.
Diabolical, I know.
