Beaker, Day 19, Part 6

(Handwave the computer here!)

Persephone: Will you stay til I fall asleep?

Loki: ... No... I've got some work to finish... but I'll stay a little bit.

Persephone: Daddy, what were you scared had happened with me?

Loki: ... After the fire yesterday... I was just really scared something bad had happened...

Persephone: But I'm fine... even when there was the fire, I was fine.

Loki: I know, but... what do you remember about Mummy?

Persephone: She died in a fire... is that why you were 'specially scared when we had a fire?

Loki: Yes.

Persephone: Were you there? When Mummy died?

Loki: No. I was at the pool with you.

Persephone: Oh... so you didn't know if she was safe?

Loki: No. I just knew she was gone afterwards.

Persephone: This morning... did you think I was gone like Mummy?

Loki: Yes... I wasn't thinking properly, but... yes...

Persephone: Do you think something like that could happen again? A big fire like that killed Mummy?

Loki: I think... I think sometimes my thoughts go to the worst place.

Persephone: Like... like when I think I see a spider but actually it's just a piece of fluff.

Loki: Yeah... just like that. I saw you were gone, and my thoughts jumped to you were really gone. ... Time to go to sleep, Princess.

Persephone: I'm right here, Daddy.

Loki: I know, baby. And I'm right here. I love you.

Loki: Sweet dreams.

Persephone: I love you too...

Loki: *You would have been firmer with her...*

Circe: *I wouldn't've brought her a computer, that's for sure. You've always been too indulgent. It's not good for children, spoiling them.*

Loki: *It isn't spoiling!*

Circe: *She disobeyed you this morning, and got a gift this evening*

Loki: *I didn't give her the computer because she disobeyed-*

Circe: *She won't understand the distinction-*

Loki: *She understood fine.*

Circe: ...

Loki: *I think... I think I frightened her more than she frightened me...*

Circe: ...

Loki: *I still miss you, you know... and I don't know if I'm getting this right...*

Circe: ...

Loki: *winces*

Loki: Have you checked the key signature?

Persephone: What? Oh... I'm 'posed to play F sharp... I thought it sounded a bit strange.

Loki: Why don't you give it another go?

Persephone: Can you teach me some more chess?

Loki: Sure - but not for too long. It's nearly bedtime.

Persephone: Can't I move him here?

Loki: No-

Persephone: But you said this one could move any squares in any way.

Loki: Yes, but she can't jump over other pieces. And it's the queen, so she's definitely "her", not "him".

Loki, I don't think that's helping.

Loki: So... I had a very good day at work. I earnt a lot of money... it made me happy, and I wanted to share that happy with you with a present.

Persephone: A computer?! Wow, Daddy...

Loki: Your very own computer. I know it's just a picture, but we'll go pick the real thing up at the weekend. I thought we could put it in your room-

Persephone: Daddy?

Loki: Yes, Princess?

Persephone: I feel bad... like... I shouldn't get something nice when I broke the rules... what's the word? I know - like I don't a 'serve a new computer when I went on yours without asking.

Loki: Well, it's not a reward. It's a present, because I want to share my good day at work with you. But you're not getting it 'til the weekend, so... how about we say no computer time until then, not even if I'm in the lab with you.

Persephone: That sounds fair... I'm really sorry, Daddy.

Loki: I know, sweetheart. Come on, bedtime.

(He came home from work with a want to give a gift. It was meant to be!)

Beaker, Day 19, Part 4

Loki: I wanted to talk about this morning...

Persephone: I'm sorry I went in the lab.

Loki: I know, Princess.

Loki: I've been thinking about why I was so angry.

Persephone: ...

Loki: I don't think I was angry first... I think I was scared.

Persephone: Oh.

Loki: I woke up and I couldn't find you.

Persephone: Oh...

Loki: I thought something had happened to you.

Persephone: But I was just in the lab-

Loki: I know that now. I didn't then. ... When I found you, I was relieved you were okay. Then my scared turned into angry... I'm sorry I shouted. You shouldn't've gone in the lab... but I shouldn't've shouted at you, either.

Persephone: When you shouted... I thought maybe you didn't want to be my daddy any more.

Loki: Oh, princess! I was scared... scared can sound like angry... but it never sounds like "I don't want you".

Loki: If I'm frightened... if I'm angry... if I'm disappointed... I still love you. Always. I'm your daddy and you're my Sephy and nothing will ever, ever make me stop loving you.

Persephone: ... Can I have a hug?

Loki: Of course, Princess.

Persephone: I love you too, Daddy. I'm sorry I broke the rules. I promise I won't ever ever go in the lab by myself ever again.

Beaker, Day 19, Part 3

Loki: *I sounded... no... I sounded... she broke a rule... the lab isn't safe... she needed to know... so why do I feel sick? ... Circe would have approved... Circe probably would've handed out a punishment to... should I ground her? Not let her sleepover at Erin's this weekend...? Circe would've reacted like I did... why doesn't that make me feel better? ... Stop thinking about sentimental rubbish, Loki. Let's be practical. Make a list:

Lock on the lab door - maybe with a passcode?

Get old desktop fixed and she could have it somewhere in the house...

More smoke alarms

Rolling ladders for the bedrooms - in case the stairs are blocked, we can use the windows

Fire drill - if I couldn't get to Persephone, she'd need to know what to do

Apologise for shouting?

Circe: *If you apologise, she'll thinking breaking rules doesn't mean consequences*

Loki: *Maybe... maybe not...*

Off he goes to work!

That's a big bonus.

Loki: *Here's my princess! ... I should spend some of my bonus on a computer, just for her... but would she see that as a reward for breaking rules... Educational software... drawing programmes... that game she showed me... she'd love it... I want her to be happy... but I want her to be safe, more.

Persephone: ... Hi, Daddy...

Loki: Hi, Princess. It's naptime.

Persephone: Yes, Daddy... Daddy...?

Loki: Yes.

Persephone: ... Are you still mad?

Loki: ... No, baby. We'll talk when you wake up.

Loki: Sweet dreams, Sephy. I love you.

Loki: Persephone?

Persephone: Oh! Morning, Daddy.

Loki: What are you doing here?

Persephone: I... I woke up early.

Loki: So you came down here by yourself? You know you're not allowed in the lab by yourself-

Persephone: I didn't touch anything! Except the computer...

Loki: That isn't the point.

Loki: I've told you before, Persephone. You don't come in the lab without me-

Loki: You can't just break rules because you feel like it!

Loki: You don't come in here without me. You ask.

Loki: Go and get dressed for school.
