安東尼奧‧薩列裡的自白

彼得‧謝佛（Peter Shaffer）寫的舞台劇（後拍成電影《莫扎特傳》）《阿馬迪斯》（Amadeus，取自莫扎特的中間名字）描寫安東尼奧‧薩列裡（Antonio Salieri）和莫扎特之間的恩怨。雖然不符史實，但卻是劇情生動，發人深省。

劇中的薩列裡從小愛好音樂，稟賦過人。他年輕時與上帝這樣地辦交易：

我願意就一個孩子所能獻上最大膽、最秘密的方式，向你禱告：「主啊，願你使我成為一個偉大的作曲家。讓我用音樂慶祝你的榮耀，也因此成為對我的慶祝。親愛的主啊，讓我成名，讓我成為不朽。在我去世以後，但願人們永遠用愛紀念我的作品。為了回報你，我發誓，此生的每時每刻，我都獻上至高的貞潔、勤勞和最深的虔誠，我也要儘力地樂意助人。阿門、阿門。」

薩列裡守住了他的諾言，生活檢點，一生貢獻於音樂，免費教導許多青年音樂學子，更是盡他的力量賙濟窮人。他的音樂事業也蒸蒸日上，做到了宮廷樂隊長。他感覺上帝履行了「諾言」。

然而，莫扎特出現了，他的音樂天賦遠超過了薩列裡。「阿馬迪斯」就是「被上帝所愛」的意思，這樣的異稟一定是從上帝來的。可是，莫扎特卻是個言語粗鄙，生活放縱的人。為了要配得上帝的恩寵，薩列裡努力拒絶自己一切的慾望。但是，莫扎特這個小子，雖然已經訂了婚，還是毫不檢點，放蕩無拘。這不公平！

與莫扎特相比，他感覺自己在音樂創作上是個失敗者。這讓薩列裡無法接受。
