Adventures has so many good stories but I will ALWAYS be biased towards The Copper Beeches... Not for any reason in particular
6th October
Get ready for today’s J villain, because Mr Jephro Rucastle from The Copper Beeches is something else entirely.
From the getgo, it’s pretty obvious this guy is a creep, from when he’s advertising very specific conditions for how he expects his governess to be (short hair and wear ‘an electric blue’ dress), to proudly exclaiming about how his son kills cockroaches with a slipper.
The client, Violet Hunter, has been approached for this job, and Rucastle even goes as far as sending her a letter to ask for her to take the job after she initially declines. He repeats that he’s very firm on her hair being short, but mentions that his daughter, Alice, has a dress for Violet to wear.
Violet excepts the job (the pay must be very good) but immediately regrets it after Rucastle acts even more weirdly. He gives off... I’ve never actually watched the movie but I imagine you would call it ‘Get out’ vibes.
He would make Violet sit in a particular position with her back against the window so he could tell her funny stories, which Violet found hilarious but his wife disagreed. Different types of humour? Maybe, but then Violet saw a man watching her from outside, and Rucastle basically forced her to tell him to go away.
If that isn’t strange enough, Violet then finds a bundle of hair in her drawers. It’s not hers, but does that make it any better?
Of course, this doesn’t link directly to Rucastle, but after he threatens Violet when she goes into the spare room which she describes to be like a prison, it does make him pretty suspicious.
Violet is aware of how creepy he is at least: “—you cannot think how caressing and soothing his manner was—‘and what has frightened you, my dear young lady?’ “But his voice was just a little too coaxing. He overdid it. I was keenly on my guard against him.”
Then, we find out how shitty Rucastle actually is.
Alice, his daughter, was unhappy with him, but found a man she wanted to marry. When she refused to sign papers which meant Rucastle would still get money from her when she married, he basically tormented her so much she got ‘brain fever’. The brain fever also meant her hair had to be cut off, hence the hair Violet found in her drawers. Alice’s boyfriend still stayed with her, so Rucastle decided to lock his daughter up and never let her leave.
Rucastle literally imprisoned his daughter for money.
Not only that, he hired a woman to replace her.
At the end, a dog nearly kills him (unfortunately he survives) but he’s hanging on for dear life, and his daughter gets to marry, so at least it’s sort of a happy ending.
Reread The Copper Beeches and felt extremely normal about Violet Hunter.
"'Photography is one of my hobbies,' said he. 'I have made my dark room up there. But, dear me! what an observant young lady we have come upon. Who would have believed it? Who would have ever believed it?' -Jephro Rucastle
The Adventure of The Copper Beeches
Top Ten Sherlock Holmes "villains"
1. Jephro Rucastle (The Adventure of The Copper Beeches)- This guy was a total ass. Keeping his daughter locked up in a room to get her money.
2. Mr. Woodley (The Adventure of Solitary Cyclist) This guy gets under my nails. I'm pretty tolerant of others, but I'm not a huge fan of this guy. Another bastard that thinks he's entitled to money, so he basically acts like a drunk frat boy and when that doesn't work, he tries to kidnap her and have a forced wedding.
3. Irene Adler. (A Scandal in Bohemia) I don't really consider her a villain However, she did blackmail a king so I think that does technically qualify her. I like her as a character though.
4. Jonas Oldacre (The Adventure of the Norwood Builder) Well, he faked his own death to frame a boy he'd never met mostly to get back at the boy's mom for saying no when she realized how creepy he was years earlier. If he isn't an entitled bastard, I don't know who is.
5. James Windibank (A Case of Identity) Another piece of scum trying to get money from a young girl by preventing her from marrying. Actually has the nerve to pretend to be a guy and then leaves her at the alter, as he can't marry her because he's her fuckingstep dad. Scum. He is scum. I don't like these kind of people, but luckily Holmes doesn't either.
6. Dr. Grimsby Roylott (The Adventure of The Speckled Band) Again, scum trying to get money from a young girl. He killed one, and then tried to kill another. He, of course, is an asshole. However, I like the manner in which he went about this. I mean, it's fucking unique. And he's got a Cheetah. Because he can.
7. James Moriarty (The Final Problem)- Yeah, yeah. Most people would put him higher on this list. But nope. I think he's important, but very overrated. Yeah, yeah, tried to kill Sherlock. Kind of an evil math professor (which far too many people overlook), but hey.
8. John Clay (The Redheaded League)- I dunno. He got a job for practically no money, so he could tunnel under a bank. Creative dude. Probably would have succeeded and came away with a lot of money if he'd waited like three days to dissolve his league. Once he'd already gotten the money. And you know, I'm impressed by the creativity of his scheme.
9. Sebastian Moran (The Adventure of The Empty House)- again. tried to kill Holmes. Assassin. You know, all that.
10. Baron Adelburt Gruner (The Illustrious Client)- Well. He's a charming con-man who's kind of a douche. Although, I like his name. Adelburt.
