I'm heartbroken but trying to stay positive. Due to my health I can't risk joining in the 50501 movement today. In honor of everyone who is standing up for their rights and freedoms against the tyranny of our country, I wanted to share an experience I had about 2 months ago. For context, I live in a small town (approx. 400 residents but we get plenty of tourists) in Arizona. I did this on a holiday weekend in November, so I knew the town would be somewhat busy.
---------------
When I peacefully protested and collected signatures for the Roe v. Wade overturn years ago, I had people taking photos of me before thanking me for what I was doing. These positive interactions made the verbal attacks worth it.
This year, I had hoped I wouldn't need to be doing my solo-sit-in on the steps again, but due to world events and the choice of many, I felt it was needed. This time I had my Handmaiden gown and didn't even have time to get the wrinkles out before I was out with my sign, expressing my feelings and the feelings of many others.
Yet again, I was approached for supportive photos and messages and was the target of harassment, but near the end of my time that day I had the most honorable exchange. I was packing my items up and was approached by an extremely kind gentleman who explained he was a French photographer doing a series on America, and he wanted to take a portrait of me. He was expressive of his support of what I was doing, even though my protesting the subject in question was something that shouldn't need to be done in modern society.
I went home, feeling glad that I fulfilled my purpose for that day, ready to go back out again. That was when I looked into the photographer more (I don't get out much so meeting new people is something I love to do).
I had no idea that I had just had my portrait taken by Stéphan Gladieu. I was humbled and brought near to tears as I scrolled through his artwork and the messages behind his photography. I couldn't (and still can't) believe that in my little town of Jerome I had this once-in-a-lifetime encounter with someone so influential, artistic, and truly awe-inspiring.
I implore you to PLEASE explore his work. He can be found at @stephangladieu and at https://www.stephangladieu.fr/
I went to Jerome today 🪐
Picked up this gorgeous piece in Jerome, AZ while on vacation. I included the artist card for reference.
There were only a few pieces in the shop with the glaze but I fell in love with the colors instantly.
30 seconds of my life well spent
Being a total bastardt and sharing my bruschetta and wine lunch. Mmm mmm!
