I was reading this response by @valerianka-97 on an earlier post of mine and the sentence about Leslie “drowning herself too” if she screws Jackie over made me think of an earlier scene...

I keep thinking back to Jackie and Leslie’s conversation on the beach where Leslie describes saving someone from drowning and almost getting pulled under.

It fits the tone of the show but seemed kind of out of place in their development... idk why. It was just very serious when they didn’t know each other that well yet. All of their other scenes were lit differently, more lighthearted, or drove the plot forward in some way. This scene didn’t serve the plot at all, which made me feel like it was there to foreshadow something to come later.

I’ve started imagining it as a metaphor for someone in Leslie’s life who got addicted to drugs and who she got into some bad shit trying to save. Which would be what Ray thought she “needed saving from” and how she got involved with or indebted to Frankie (if it turns out she is). But that’s fully reaching into fanfiction territory with how specific it is.

Did this scene catch anyone else’s attention?

Leslie also asks Jackie outright if she’s a good swimmer. Another thought I had with her asking at different times about the dead kids bothering Jackie, about her relationship with her family, and about her not drinking, was that she could be scouting for weaknesses that Frankie could exploit. Which makes me scared for Jackie’s sobriety going forward.
