Hello again everyone! Chapter 7 of Good Intentions and Bad Consequences is out now! It took a long time and I’m sorry about that, but nevertheless here’s a small excerpt from it. This chapter introduces Jesse’s past which I think is very interesting for his character development throughout the story.
“Okay,” Jesse sighed, shaking his head. “I’ll go check to make sure it hasn’t flooded yet.”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that, Jesse,” his mom told him. Jesse shook his head at her once more.
“No, it’s alright, mom. Besides, you two shouldn’t be going up and down the stairs anyway! Your legs might give out!” Jesse laughed and this made his parents roll their eyes in amusement.
“Okay, then. Go slay the dragon for us old people,” his dad joked, giving him a slight pat on the back before turning and going to clean the kitchen up. His mom followed and Jesse turned to where the basement door was.
Going downstairs, he looked all around for any sign of water. There didn’t seem to be any, but he knew from all the times before when he had to check that water could hide practically anywhere. So, he checked each and every part of the basement and all the corners. Satisfied that there wasn’t any water around, Jesse turned to head back upstairs. On his way up a loud banging sound rang through the air once.
His heart began to beat quicker in his chest as he stood there with one foot on the bottom step of the staircase. There was silence after the bang which made him worry even more.
“Mom? Dad?” Jesse called out.
Seconds ticked by. More. Some more. Nothing. There was no response. Jesse snapped out of his trance and quickly raced up the stairs, fearing the worst. He finally made his way at the top of the steps and looked left then right.
“Mom? Dad? Are you there?”
His questions still weren’t answered as he began to look all around the house for them. There was no sign of life other than himself. Jesse ran from room to room looking everywhere for them and finding nothing. He managed to loop himself back to the kitchen. It still wasn’t cleaned up and plates, silverware, and spaghetti were still laid out on the table. Fear gripped his chest harder and threatened to overcome him entirely. Jesse breathed in and out trying to figure out what had happened. Just then, a voice interrupted his breathing and made him spin around.
The voice belonged to his mother, who was standing there. Jesse instantly became calmer at seeing her and let out a loud relieved sigh, shaking his head at himself and looking down.
“Oh, thank god! I heard a loud sound and something bad happened,” he said.
“Something bad did happen,” she said in a flat monotone voice.
Jesse slowly moved his head up and looked at her again. This time he noticed small red streaks on her clothes. They looked like paint. Either that or…
“Is that blood?!” Jesse asked, worry in his voice. His question was just answered with a smile from his mom.
“Yes, but don’t worry. It’s not mine...”
