“has anyone ever told you that you look JUST like that missing chosen hero?”
Linktober day 16- merchant ft. Jester Link :>
At long last, we have Link, Hero of the Court!!
He's very much based off of The Court Jester by thquib, and his story goes a bit like this:
The kingdom of Hyrule was ruled kindly and justly by the Royal Family, as it had been for many, many years. However, tragedy struck when Ganondorf and his forces attacked, slaughtering the Royal Family and taking no prisoners. He was dangerously efficient, leaving no room for any kind of secret escape from anyone, not even Princess Zelda. Thus, Ganondorf took the throne, establishing himself as the new king of Hyrule. Now that he was unopposed, though, he would need some people to serve him.
We now turn to the protagonist of our story, Link. He was a stick-thin and orphaned eight-year-old boy living on the streets with nothing to his name except the clothes on his back, spending his nights in alleyways and in the streets, among the garbage, filth, and waste. For his breakfasts, he would eat whatever scraps he could find, and for dinner, he would sleep. On occasion, he would get lunch in the form of people's unwanted leftovers, or perhaps something he managed to collect just enough Rupees for. He'd earn these Rupees and leftovers by doing tricks and telling jokes, for he was very entertaining and flexible (these days, we'd call his flexibility Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), and people would give him these things for his acts. All in all, he was an odd child, but people knew he meant no harm, although no one ever offered him a place to stay.
One day, King Ganondorf came riding up to him on his large horse. Having heard of Link's acts, he told Link that he would serve as his court jester. Now, Link was no fool, at least not in the intelligence sense; he knew that King Ganondorf didn't take lightly to being told "no". However, even if King Ganondorf was able to take "no" for an answer, Link would have been an actual fool to deny this position; by Hylia, he was being offered a roof over his head, new clothes, regular baths, a real bed, an actual income, and three square meals a day, all for the price of doing flips and telling jokes, which was something he was doing for even less! It was no wonder that Link readily said yes, and with much enthusiasm.
And thus, starting from that day onward, Link was King Ganondorf's court jester, doing silly tricks and dances and telling only the best of jokes to His Evilness. He befriended Impa, the elderly nurse who made it a point to look after young Link; because of this, Link wound up seeing Impa as something of a mother, or at least the closest thing to one. King Ganondorf eventually came to trust Link, finding him very loyal, and as a result, Link effectively became King Ganondorf's advisor, learning all of his darkest secrets and weaknesses; one could even argue that Link was the only one allowed to say "no" to King Ganondorf, albeit that was still restricted.
As the years passed, however, King Ganondorf began to weaken; the Triforce of Power was losing potency, it seems, and it caused him to become paranoid and agitated. Even though Link had served him for a decade at this point, King Ganondorf couldn't help but feel as if he would overthrow him or do something to him, despite Link's loyalty. It wasn't until during a performance, when Link was standing on his hands and juggling with his feet while casually telling a joke about the latest scandal committed by the mayor of Kakariko, that King Ganondorf saw something on Link's hand... a Triforce piece. Something in King Ganondorf snapped, and that night, he had Link exiled, fearing what Link could do to him, owning a piece of the Triforce.
But King Ganondorf didn't stop there. He knew that if he just exiled Link, Link could very well just return for vengeance and therefore overthrow him. So the next day, King Ganondorf sent out some of his men to attack Link - not to fight him, but to get rid of him. When they found Link, sitting at a campfire in the woods and watching his soup come to a boil, they knocked him out and buried him deep in the ground. This deed done, they returned to tell King Ganondorf that they had successfully gotten rid of him. King Ganondorf assumed that his paranoia would subside, now that the only one who could stop him was gone.
Well, as you can guess, that's not the end of the story. Link should have died, either from the brain damage or from being buried alive, but he didn't. A year after his burial, he awoke. Confusedly, he looked around, and although it took a few moments, he quickly realized that he had been buried, and that roots and vines had wrapped around him, keeping him still. In a fit of panic, Link tore and ripped through the vines and roots, eventually clawing his way out of the ground. He took a breath of fresh air, but soon he saw something in the sky... smoke. He stumbled to the outer edge of the woods, only to see that Castletown was in a state of disrepair. It was destroyed, and everything was going wrong.
Link sank to his knees. He couldn't recognize a single thing in front of him, and if not for the statue of King Ganondorf standing in the middle of it all, he would've assumed he'd taken a wrong turn somewhere. Was what he was seeing real? Had this all really happened to the land he loved? Grief overtook him, and he couldn't help but burst into tears and laughter, for that was all he could really do at the moment.
His laughter finally died down, and a woman's voice entered the back of his mind. He wasn't sure, but he was filled with the distinct feeling that it was Hylia herself speaking to him. She told him that she had been the one to wake him up, and that she needed him to save the land of Hyrule, which had been tainted by King Ganondorf's vileness. She told him of the Master Sword, and bade him to bring peace to the world. Shortly thereafter, Link reunited with Impa, who was thankfully alive, and she told him all that had happened; that King Ganondorf had grown weak and paranoid, exiling or otherwise executing those he deemed a threat to him, until everyone who served him was gone. She told Link that, even though King Ganondorf was weak, Link looked like death warmed over, which didn't help his chances in a fight, either.
Eventually, Link returned to Castletown, having found the Master Sword, and roused a riot. They would storm the castle, which was defenseless at this point, for King Ganondorf trusted not even a Darknut, leaving him all alone. The storming of Hyrule Castle was not difficult, and Link reached his old king. King Ganondorf couldn't believe his eyes when he saw none other than Link, marching into the throne room covered in dirt, vines, leaves, and roots, looking like the living dead and holding the Master Sword in his hand with a charming, serene smile on his pale face. They fought, of course, but Link got the upper hand, deposing and disposing of King Ganondorf. The people went up in a raucous cheer when Link threw the gilded throne out the window, along with Ganondorf's body. The monarchy was gone, but the people turned to Link to rule the land of Hyrule, at least for the time being, bringing the old age to a close. The fool, the mere court jester, thus instated a new saga for the land of Hyrule.
Court is playful, intelligent, and furtively wise, having the uncanny ability to know many things about someone, whether or not they tell him outright. He's flexible, both metaphorically and literally, and it's no shock to learn that he takes every opportunity he can to walk around on his hands, rather than his perfectly good feet. There's a dramatic, somewhat petty side to him, but he ultimately means well in the end. If one tried to call him anything along the lines of "Your Majesty" or "King", he'd be quick to correct them, for he is no king; there is no Royal Family to rule, but here he is, making sure the land of Hyrule survives and recovers. To his dismay, his automatic response to grief and distress is laughter, rather than weeping, which he is aware makes others uncomfortable. Sometimes he wonders if anyone did actually survive the slaughter brought on by Ganondorf, but if anyone did survive, then they have not come out to say so.

Lady Petunia scares him because she's head over heels for him, convinced he's secretly in love with her too, and won't catch a hint. He can't be any more straightforward because there are still Limits to what he can say to nobles, but boy howdy is he worried her folks will catch on, blame him, and get him in trouble.
"IT WON'T WORK OUT, OUR STATUSES-"
"Oh, but secret rendezvous are so romantic, aren't they? It's okay! I'll still visit you, even when I'm married~!"
So anyway I'm thinking of making her one of the sages! >:)
Bonus:
What if I got a little obsessed with my new Link... What then....
What if he had just a wee bit of fire magic and used it for tricks... And maybe later he can learn to use it for other stuff or get something that channels it to make it stronger... And what if he got a Mask of Truth Unveiling (uses magic meter)...
I can't stop drawing him
