listening to the audiobook of Jesusland by Joelle Kidd is a bit funny as someone who grew up loosely catholic I got so taken aback by the mention of a projector for hymn lyrics like huh what do you mean they bring technology into sermons that's wild. Also every description of evangelical churches sounds weird to me they sound so corporate and it's breaking my brain lol
Since Alberta wants to also bring the continent down with them apparently, I think it's time we collectively revisit the idea of Jesusland:
“Miles and miles and the sun goin' down
Pulses glow from their homes
You're not alone, lights come on
As you lay your weary head on their lawn
Parking lots cracked and growing grass
You see it all from offices to farms
Crosses flying high above the malls
Along the walk
Through Jesusland
Jesusland,”
If you want to write off the southern US...
...because you think it’s all rednecks and regressive policies, I invite you to fuck all the way off.
I venture out of my Tumblr hidey-hole and fucking “Jesusland” shit is back and on Twitter this time and people are showing their whole asses all over the place. I’m not giving up on my home because you lack the imagination to realize that there are people of color, queer people, and just plain ol’ non-shitty people people are trying to make the South better, y’all.
