Akureyri

Akureyri is Iceland’s second largest city which is why we opted to spend two nights here. 

We stayed at Akureyri Backpackers which was a cute little hostel with some random decorations. The showers were very clean, there was a bar, and the rooms were pretty spacious considering there were 4 bunk beds in them.

There was no set itinerary for Akureyri so we started off by wandering around. The most noticeable landmark was Akureyrarkirkja, the local church, so we walked up to get a closer look. Someone had graffitied on the wall which was unfortunate.

We were hungry again (what’s new?) but it wasn’t really dinner time. Instead we decided to share a snack at Akureyri Fish where we got fish & chips and a few beers during their happy hour.

For some reason we really went beer crazy in Akureyri. First we hit up ölstofa akureyrar which is a local pub specializing in craft beers. They had a lot of Einstock beer available since that beer is brewed in Akureyri. We tried all of them. They also had a seating area upstairs that was recently renovated to focus on Einstock brewery. The map on the wall of all the micro breweries in Iceland was my favorite part.

We also went to R5 Beer lounge one night. They had a huge selection of beer as well as some whiskeys and other spirits. The bartender was super helpful with providing us advice on what to get based off our preferences. We spent way too long here and ended up going back to the hostel quite drunk, meeting some fellow American travelers, and drinking more in the kitchen area.

Like I said, went beer crazy. We did a tour at Bruggsmiðjan Brewery (better known as Kaldi beer) which was the first microbrewery in Iceland. The tour was about an hour long and included samples of different beers and views of their canning facilities. Our tour guide mentioned they had just finished building “beer spas” where you can rent a jacuzzi full of beer to lounge in. We were a week short of the grand opening. Bummer!

We mostly cooked our own food in Akureyri but I did sneak in one or two more Icelandic hot dogs from Pylsuvagninn Hafnarstræti. No, I will never get sick of them. We also did stop by a Bonus store to restock on some of our food supplies. That derpy looking pig is still one of my favorite logos. Also, I swear they had a whole section just for hot dogs.

Last but not least, on our way out we went to a bakery called Bakaríið Við Brúnna. Honestly, I don’t even remember what we got but it was all delicious. So basically...just buy one of everything.
