ning que goes off, it’s not like anybody’s gonna miss lin ling anyway
"I know that books all tell of tales of a Prince who had his throne stolen and had to leave. Then he returns to his nation to get revenge and then ascends to the throne once more. Or a young master escapes from a noble family, ruined by the schemes of corrupt officials, and after much hardship, seeks to correct the false accusations. But why is it that the main character of every revenge story must be a Prince? Is it that the son of a porter and a maid doesn't have the qualifications to get revenge?"

Ever Night 将夜 (Chinese drama)
Genre: Fantasy, historical, wuxia
This is based on a novel by Mao Ni. Translation can be read here.
Synopsis from here: When a family was unjustly massacred by a great general, a young boy named Ning Que escaped. He managed to survive in the wilds through his wits and committing murder. One day he dug out from a pile of corpses a little girl, Sang Sang. Since that day the two of them are inseparable. Ning joined the frontier military and eventually become part of the entourage of Princess Li Yu as she traveled back to the capital. He managed to discovered the hidden school known as the Upper Storey, which leads him and Sang Sang to many wondrous adventures. However, hostile forces are gathering around them, and people not who they appeared to be. Is Ning Que the son of the King of Underworld, or the savior of humanity against the Eternal Night? Ning Que would defy the powers of Heaven and Earth to protect his beloved…
After a few start and stop Chinese drama recently, I have not been watching anything until this. I was attracted to it by the screenshots on tumblr, mainly portraying the affectionate relationship between Ning Que and Sang Sang. I have only watched about 20+ episodes and I try to avoid spoilers so I’m only guessing that there will be a romance between Ning Que and Sang Sang later on in the show. In the meantime, there is this really cute and fun relationship between the two of them. Sang Sang is a bit of a silly girl but she is young and very innocent, and totally loyal. I enjoy their bickering and staunch support of each other. There is their totally tragic past lurking in the background but at the same time, it doesn’t create this super atmosphere of angst. Rather it seems to strengthen them and drives them forward without any self-pity.
The smugness of Ning Que can be too much at times and I probably would hate him if not for the unexpectedly warm relationships he has with the supporting characters. The bromance between him and the 12th disciple of Fuzhi is light-hearted, hilarious and seriously cute.
The scenery, from the opening scene of the desert to the lushness of the school (书院), were a treat to behold.
The script is not too over-whelming but still lyrical enough. It’s definitely not as “high-level” as The Rise of the Phoenixes (which I sometimes totally could not understand in Chinese) but still simple and elegant, with some modern touches.
The fight scenes are very exciting and well put together. Sometimes it can be a little OTT as the powers of the characters are at the magical fantastic level but the CGI is somehow not too cheesy.
At 20+ episodes, I’m happy to say that I’m still anticipating the rest of the 30+ episodes and have yet to hit the slump in pacing. I enjoy the character growth in terms of power and maturity.
